A world class 100m sprinter running an 18 minute 5k seems unlikely.
With the kind of sprint speed he has, it seems impossible he would have that kind of endurance
An 18 minute 5k is about the same IAAF points as a 27.0 200m or 13.2 100m.
I’m pretty sure almost any top male distance runner could hit those 100m or 200m times, so why shouldn’t a top sprinter be able to hit an equivalent distance time?
Two different animals.
World class middle and long distance runner can have excellent, but not world class speed. You don't need examples of this...milers up to 10k guys who can blast a 200m in 22 seconds or even faster.
The genes you need to be a world class sprinter preclude being able to run even a solid 5k, It's even unusual to see a world class 100m/200m guy be able to run a decent 800m.
Has something to do with this fast twitch slow twitch thing. Maybe someone here knows.
All I know is that in my many years of following running, I have seen many world class middle and long distance runners with excellent speed (but not world class) but have never seen a world class short sprinter ever run a solid race above 600m. There have been a handful of 400m runners with world class times that could also run tip notch 800m -- even those are few and far between
