I certainly wasn't attacking you. My comment was just that you weren't hating on NP or their coach... which is what the guy said.

The coach definitely moves the needle, creates a winning environment, and enthusiasm to run, but let's be real ... Does it really matter if he recruited from neighboring cities? If we had 3- 4 guys in the state, heck the entire nation, running close to Nico Youngs times, 3 guys within 5 seconds of German Fernandezs historic time at Woodward Park, that would be an amazingly deep year at the front end. These kids are talented enough to push for national records. I have a hard time believing it's some coaching miracle. He hit the lottery 4-5 times over with these kids' talent the last few years. And yes, also instilled a great environment for them to succeed.

Check out the twins' YouTube channel L&L. They are extremely self motivated and dedicated, and have a great attitude towards every workout they do. I'm sure the coaching is great but he's also extremely lucky in many ways.

I love the Trumper comment. Shows how off topic you really are or how crazy you are. These MB's are great sometimes, but whenever someone does something great the trolls like to make excuses. Doing this it's called low self-esteem.

I'm a somewhat casual follower of high school running. I ran through college, have a daughter that will be entering HS in the next couple years and live in LA. So, I see a lot of news around Newbury Park cross. I've read quite a few stories, watched quite a few interviews and closely follow their results. I saw this story on the front of Letsrun

That led me to this thread. The author of the story is right on the money. Why can't the coach be lucky and great at the same time? I looked through all the posts and most seem to hint to that, but there are a few that refuse to believe the coach is lucky. I've never seen a reaction like this before about any coach and I have a theory that the coach perpetuates the belief that he's not lucky, but is completely responsible for the success. I don't recall him ever talking about the feeder program that seems to exist in his area or mention how unusual it is to have all of those kids show up at his school with the experience and times they've already produced. This interview is a perfect example.

At about 45 seconds in, the interviewer asks a question about the combination of talent and culture. It's a perfect time for the coach to say, "yeah, I've been lucky to walk into a really great situation with some talented families", but instead he turns it into an answer talking about what he did. The amount of times he says "I" is pretty obvious. He says I wanted them to do this, I told them to do that, I think they'll do this, if they just trust ME, etc.

He seems to bring much of the criticism upon himself. He obviously follows these boards closely and hears the criticism because he refers to it in interviews many times. It clearly bothers him and constantly looks to discredit or prove the criticism wrong. It's almost like he feels that giving credit to others might diminish his contributions. Not that he'd listen, but my unsolicited advice would be, show a bit of humility and thankfulness for the situation you're in. Give some more praise and credit to the kids and don't make it so much about you. The accomplishments will speak for themselves and you'll be a much more likable personality and much of the criticism will turn into praise.

Ok you’re a little obsessed with the Newbury Park Coach.

All the coaching threads are full of trolls and for every great coach there will be some coach who wished they had success.

I thought it was a good interview. I was at Fresno and all winning teams get a mic when they get their trophy. He was very professional and gave praise to his staff and athletes.

He is a fantastic coach doing amazing things for those boys and girls. The only people who care about the M Boards are you and the trolls. The guy doing the interview didn’t even let him speak half the time and gave him praise and he definitely deserves it.

Right on brand. Complete refusal to admit luck played any role and calling anyone who disagrees a troll.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but just like I felt about GO, I find NPs dominance kind of boring.

I agree with both of you. Their dominance has taken over the discussion but has eliminated banter about who is best.

The thing that shows the coaching talent, or maybe it disproves its, is how Leo caught his brother Lex during the offseason and passed him. Leo had a PR almost 15 seconds slower than lex's in the spring in the 3200m.
