This revenue vs. nonrevenue misinformation has been stated so many times that even our own profession has become to believe it. Yes, T&F (and nearly every sport including big time football) does not bring in enough external revenue to offset program costs. When we consider the # of students our sports bring to campus, however, the #s we recruit in T&F by FAR bring in more revenue to the system (and then some) to cover all our budget as well have monies left over to help pay for faculty/staff, etc.....
Having coached at a Power 5 and been an athlete at a G5 (and coach), the admin makes a point to illustrate the revenue vs nonrev ideology to justify football. It is said so many times that people just assume it is true. It is not. D3 and NAIA models suggest otherwise. Many (not all) of those schools are bringing in so many kids and so much revenue that their recruited athletes pay for their program and give back to the institutional financial pot.
Bovee is very difficult in many different ways. He is hard to work for and is an a$$…coming from a coaching friend that left the program a few years ago.
Bovee is a great coach.... most of his assistant got better job or gave up coaching for family... he is doing a great job as the head coach. He needs a wing man or associated head coach.

This is only true if the school cannot fill those enrollment spots with non-athletes. That's probably true for a number of places. But most schools have more students wanting to attend than they have available spots, so they really don't need the non-revenue sports to generate that tuition
I've commented here before about bovee's toxicity...but am always shut down. Every other year i will remind you all as this will keep happening.
I’ve heard Bovee is every bit as toxic as Brent Chumbley. I used to coach in the Big South and heard the stories. Feel bad for whoever has to work with these two!
So while I'm sure it is true that some schools have plenty of students to fill spots and are in no need to fill spots with athletes, it may not be true for the majority of schools at present.
Beyond that, even for schools who don't need athletes to make up enrollment declines, they still count on those student-athletes to fill large teams that bring in revenue and potentially further build an alumni base more strongly tied to the school because of their athletic experiences - yielding greater return on investment as compared to the "normal" student who may not have invested in college life to the same degree.

I appreciate this point getting brought up: But most schools have more students wanting to attend than they have available spots, so they really don't need the non-revenue sports to generate that tuition
I've been at 3 universities. One was selective enough that there was no need to drive enrollment numbers. They've been building dorms consistently over the last decade.
The other two relied on athletics to drive enrollment, sometimes substantially. All were Division I, but very different ways of approaching how rosters are built and what the administration's goals were.
I won't pretend to know the percentage of schools that need higher enrollment vs couldn't care less. I'm sure we sometimes overstate our sport's role in that equation and I'm sure we also forget how many schools really need it when we only focus on the household names.
Jeff Bovee creates a toxic environment amongst his staff. His comments in staff meetings, the games he plays with other event groups, and his constant secret meetings are just plain destructive and tiresome. He has had at least 5 assistant coaches either quit college coaching all together or go to a lesser paying coaching job just to get away. Bovee will continue to be searching for assistants annually until he changes his approach. Until then, he will continue to end college coaching careers. The guy can coach, but applicants be aware.
I'm confused at what you're getting at here. You're saying young coaches, most of whom are in Volunteer or GA positions, should pass up full-time opportunities that don't offer enough salary? Are you that disconnected that you don't realize how hard it is to get your foot in the door or how competitive most positions are? Most postings get enough serious candidates that if the program's top choice turns the position down when they won't budge on salary there will be 3-5 other qualified coaches ready to take it. While I agree some of these salaries are ridiculously low, you can't blame struggling young coaches working their butts off 60-80 hours/week for accepting a way out. We're a non-revenue sport with high roster numbers and low funding. Turning down low-paying jobs isn't going to change that as unfortunate as it is.

Declining enrollment likely is hitting more, rather than less, institutions of higher learning. Community colleges are being hit more so than 4-yr schools (https://www.usnews.com/news/education-news/articles/2022-05-26/college-enrollment-declines-are-here-to-stay). Considering John Coughlin was the long time Illinois State coach, maybe Bovee is just filling the established A-hole roll expected by ISU. Maybe it’s in the job description?

Bovee isn’t the problem. Instant gratification and people not capable of paying their dues is to blame. Know what you are signing up for or find something else to do.
This profession is becoming a joke with all the young coaches “ready to take over”
Young coaches have five minutes of success and believe they deserve or are owed more. They do not realize their departments and head coaches will quickly move on to another coach with 10 minutes of success that doesn't have an ego problem.
Haha…is a director/head coach…like Bovee supposed to help support and mentor “young” coaches? There is a line from being a dictator and a mentor. If you are a good person and do the job right you can be demanding but also have compassion and be a good mentor. Again, from a coaching friend he doesn’t do any of that. Bovee is worried about Bovee and nothing else.

Why talk about other coaches like this? All these posts say I hear. So you are spreading rumors and tarnishing a persons name! Just stop. You left elementary school years ago.
