This board LOVES to try to knock down our best coaches. Robert Johnson will ALWAYS have a job at Oregon because he’s a better coach that you can imagine. His ‘down’ year literally would be a dream for 99.9% of the coaches out there.
A lot of mid major assistants make 30k - 45k. (To put that in perspective, fast food places in my neighborhood are paying $37k to kids who just graduated from high school.)
You REALLY need to have a passion to be a college coach because you certainly aren't doing it for the money.
From a financial perspective they're actually better off being a high school teacher making 60k - 80k and coaching their high school team.
How much fun can it be to spend years as an assistant coach making starvation wages?
I'd have to imagine most have some sort of other job, no? Whether at the university or somewhere else - anything from office jobs to bartending. And it can't be easy because coaching is a commitment and doesn't always have clear time parameters. And meets can be all over the place.
So all the rumors about Oregon, the other thread dedicated to Robert Johnson not being renewed, the other thread about Safesport allegations, and a few news articles questioning why they did so poorly was allllllll for nothing? Lol
The word was he wouldn’t be renewed but now all of that chatter just went away without any real info on what happened. Most schools announce when a coach is renewing a contract, resigning, or getting fired.
Oregon = nothing

Asking why everyone speculated on a job is NOT knocking down other coaches. This thread is to discuss OPEN. COACHING. POSITIONS…. not to degrade other coaches. Not who has a down year, not rumors (Although that’s what it has become).
Robert Johnson’s contract expires 06/30/22 (12 days) unless an announcement says otherwise. I like RJ I hope he remains his job, he’s done well. My whole point is why did we spend that much time over allegations if there is not a true vacancy? Let’s get back to open discussions about open jobs. Not the opinion on if someone is a good/bad coach. Remember this is a business. If there’s a vacancy treat it that way.
Petros cryptic text earlier today. Which mid major job do you think he's targeting or just got hired for? UNT? SFA?
I thought Petros said that he was done with college coaching and only wanted to coach pros from now on.
He might have figured out there's not that much money in the pro decathlon circuit and it blows also having to be a high school strength coach on the side to be able to get a real salary/use facilities
I think it's more about the love for the sport and the passion to help people. That means more than money to some people.
This is one of the silliest "arguments" pushed by people: that passion and compensation are not compatible, but drive and greed are.
You don't crush internal motivation by rewarding and recognizing it appropriately and giving people the resources to grow and develop that motivation and skills.
