Heard they were going after a couple of assistants at power 5s that had big showings at NCAAs this year.
Unlikely anyone would want to go from being a top 15 team in XC to a program that already has the blueprint for winning track titles that doesn’t involve a complete team of distance runners.
Whoever they get, they have to be better than Solinsky. The men were 10th at SECs this year. Anyone who can develop athletes at all shouldn’t be that far back with the talent on the roster.
I am interested in the assistant coach jobs at Cal State San Marcos & Cal State Poly-Pomona. Both posted recently enough. Can anyone provide any insights?

I have heard the same thing myself. Unsure why a successful distance coach in the SEC would take the UF job or any power five distance coach other than maybe more money. Some would argue that UF is not a long term job and has not resulted in moving onto a bigger coaching job.
Jeff Pig lasted about 4-5 years (Head coach at UNF via Georgia)
Todd Morgan lasted about 2-3 years (No longer coaching)
Paul Spangler lasted about 4-5 years (No longer coaching)
Chris Solinsky lasted about 4-5 years (Oregon assistant)

Try applying for them.
In four words, you (Trackfan55) have illustrated everything that is wrong with this site.

Assuming Florida is sticking with the same event emphasis model it is doubtful significant scholarships will be spent in the distance area.
What do they want? Best guess is a coach who can helps distance runners pick up a few points at Nationals to win another NC and have a moderately SEC competitive XC squad. It is an unrealistic expectation to be competitive at the top end of the SEC XC or Nationally with limited scholarships going towards distance.
As such they may be looking for a coach with a "name" to lure recruits (example, Solinsky) and/or a coach who is known to develop runners. This coach would need to check their ambition for developing a full distance program and be okay developing a few individuals to national prominence and being mediocre in XC.
So.... why would an up and comer distance coach take that job - especially if they are already established at a distance program that is nationally competitive? If they are in charge of their own program becoming the least important coach on a staff may not be attractive - even with more pay.
This is no dig against Florida - they have a plan and execute it exceptionally well. Simply put, the distance coach needs to be okay functioning within limited parameters. Knowing this will reduce the pool of coaches willing to consider such a move.

Spangler got screwed over by a sleezeball at Boston University. He got fired a few days after winning coach of the year.

Have heard some real coaches have applied! Wonder if they get a look or if fl has their person already?

Heard SM is a cool spot that could see some success… Pomona seems to be competitive in sports but I don’t know much about their program. Apply and keep us posted, good luck!
Who are real coaches? I would be curious to hear some names.
I wonder if Holloway will go for the name again or actually get someone who can develop athletes.
I feel at the end of the day he will have to settle for his 4th, 5th or 6th choice. By now, anyone who has been coaching for a number of years knows what they would be getting into at UF. -little scholarship money

The internet is a powerful tool. In the time it took you to post this, you could have just as easily gone to those schools websites and received your answers. Or social media too. Last I checked all positions were filled, months ago.

San Marcos is indeed open. It is a full-time position, although not a very high salary. They are looking for someone who can support a variety of event groups, be a positive and supportive presence at practice, travel to meets, and handle much of the behind-the-scenes work. The head coach knows it's likely a more attractive position for an up-and-comer than for a more established coach, but this job could provide a great gateway to a collegiate coaching career.

Too many schools are only making it possible to take jobs if they have a spouse that can support them or they are single and willing to live with 5 roommates.
$30k in California is a joke. Warren Wilson College has a job in Ashveville, NC - one of the most expensive/touristy places in NC and they aren't even offering relocation/moving assistance.
People always say "once we start demanding more, we'll get more" but there will always be someone desperate enough to take the insulting compensation.
