One of my favorite Bekele races was the 2007 Osaka 10000 meter World Championship. In the final lap, for a few seconds it looked like Sihine had the gold, but then Bekele does what he does best:
Amazing finishing kick, and smart of Bekele to let Sihine increase his lead in the final lap as he seemed to sense that that pace was too fast a bit too early.
That's one of my favorites. I have the full 5000 and 10000 (and the women's 5000 and 10000 (Shalane Bronze)). But the real best of 2008 is the Marathon with Wanjiru. I have that full race too.
The power of Bekele in 2005-2008 was unprecedented, and to this day unmatched.
Absolutely incredible to watch. Hope he puts it all together this weekend!!!!

Love the video! I was thinking about the 2008 X/C championships where he stopped to readjust his shoe, lost 30 seconds on the leaders and still made them look like children in winning his final title.
That was a great moment, but I don't know about 30 seconds!

My goodness yes. I remember watching that marathon and thinking it was the most impressive road race I’ve ever seen. Even with the WR under 2:02 and the 1:59, it is still the most impressive one I have seen.
I think it is fair to say he both literally and figuratively kicked ass!!!

My above response is to this comment ^
I have NEVER seen a race like Wanjirus 2008 marathon run. For those who havent, you're missing something special.

Was anyone really being drug tested in those years?
Also a reminder of another monster in the race, still kicking ass and taking names, many Olympics later:
"Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, who denied Bekele a world championship double in Paris in 2003, was unable to follow the leader when he broke for home and finished well adrift in 13.02.80."
LR does not approve. Leading and kicking from the front! All the posters here know the only acceptable strategy is sit and kick. I’m sure there were posts here when this happened about how bad his strategy was. If only he had listened he could’ve won gold.

Bekele was not in peak 10000m shape in 2007. He "only" managed a 26,46 that year. I remember him saying in an in interview that he had focused too much on breaking the 3000 WR and lost some of his endurance.

My favorite part of that video is about 150 to go he throws up a #1 finger or something to someone.
I prefered the one that Craig Engels did and then got completely dropped in the home straight
Bekele always generates excitement when he's entered in a race. Because he's so amazingly talented. Expectations are always high. He's aging but even I would like to see him go after the world marathon record again. Before he retires. I'm also excited to finally see him bring his talent to NYC. I hope the coverage is good. With Bekele racing it's going to be exciting.
Wow, he ran about 4:56 for his last 2000. Thanks for sharing ! Will be watching him hopefully smoke the field tomorrow .
Anyone who thinks Kipchoge is the distance GOAT watch this and the dozens of other times Bekele crushed Kipchoge.
Jesus Christ. How fast do you think his last lap could have been if he went full tilt to the line!?
