New Arizona coach Bernard Lagat in his first year for the Wildcats had arguably the most disastrous meet in Pac12 history. Men and women take last with a men’s DNF team score and women blowing out the score with 343. This team has already been rock bottom but somehow broke through the floor to collapse even lower. What is Lagat doing at Arizona??
Men’s team only took 5 to the meet and threw up 63-66-69-70-DNF with a field of 72 runners. Their #1 didn’t finish until after 6 out of 8 of the other teams had all 7 men in. Their top runner beat Cal and ASU’s 5th men in 26:57. There is no way this is the result of a D1 program.
Women went 67-73-78-90-93-99 out of 99 runners. Top runner 23:10. 2 minutes earlier was Colorado’s 7th at 21:19. 8 teams had their top 5 in before their #1. Average team mile pace of 6:24. Colorado is probably doing their long runs faster than AZ’s race.
Either Lagat is just as abysmal as James Li after his mysterious “retirement” or this program is beyond rescue. What gives?
