I have done it after to freshen up the legs, so to speak. I have also done progressive hill sprints (10s), but almost 100% effort at the end, which is not really normal for strides. I again learned that strides can stiffen up the legs to get responsive for the next day(s). Running economy is about having leg stiffness and running slow reduces it. So progressive strides to fairly fast can benefit. I have started to use them the day before workout day and not only to freshen legs after easy running.
Probably some speed for the legs after running when you are tired could be the most beneficial speed training for long distance athletes.
Twice a week, day before my workout days.
In HS we did them every day, I felt that was good. But doing them a few times works too.
