Why can't you commit to a 15 to 20 mile run one day a week?
Greg is a busy man. He doesn't have the time for a 2 hour run.

I still doubt I'd run a marathon, but the most I could commit to training wise would be about
5-6 miles a day with doubles two-three times/week. 1 day of rest. 1 longer run of 8-10 miles or so.
So, that's maybe 50 miles/week. Would that be enough to run a decent marathon?
I turn 37 in a month.
Best of 4:20 for 1500, 9:25 for 3000, 16:19 5k, 26:21 8k, 57:58 10 miles. All were over 15 years ago.
I'm at least 15lbs above racing weight right now.
No. Your times from 15 years ago are irrelevant. Start actually training and maybe, just maybe, you will be able to run under 5 hours for a marathon.

Greg, like others have suggested, 50 mpw is high enough volume to approach your potential, which at age 37 with your PRs, I'd estimate as 2:40ish. So maybe 2:47 or so on 50 miles per week. My PRs are nearly identical, and I ran 2:40 on less than less mileage than that (but was younger).
But you'll need to schedule long runs. Build up to 20-milers, every other week. I understand that career, kids, home maintenance, etc might make it difficult to dedicate a 3-hour block of time, but that's only twice a month. And you can take two days off on those weeks. Plan a 2-hour long run for the other weeks.
Start a separate training thread, and I'll bet a lot of us will be following with interest! Best wishes.

You're right. 5 hours is reasonable to expect, I'd be tired after all those nights with your mother.

also, your PRs (above) are INCREDIBLY slow
No training thread. LRC wants a weekly YouTube Vlog of Greg's 'Thon training. If Seth Demoor can do a daily vlog with 4four kids and wife Greg can you can fit in one a week. I suspect his viewership numbers could quickly surpass many instgram women whose main purpose in life is to show what they eat in a day, how many bikins they can fit try on in two minutes, and give their insightful input on variuos philosophical/socio-economic issues.
Greg I'm rooting for you make the comeback and run sub 3:07 guys in their 40s running great times you could surely prove your point and have plenty of time!
With the training you've suggested here I think you would go through half in about 1:25 (or even faster if you didn't pace yourself) and then blow up to something like 3:10/15, pretty much walking by the end (if you finished). If you actually added some long runs as has been suggested, no reason you couldn't shoot for a sub 3 even on only 50 miles a week or so, you'll still struggle at the end on that mileage though even with some long runs, the last 6 miles are rough even if you're fit. The best advice given here is to aim for a half and go from there.
If you put some decent mileage in then there's no reason you couldn't aim for about 2:50 or even just below for a 2nd marathon if you still wanted to after the first. The weight will just come off naturally if you train, I've lost about 15lbs since starting training again and I wasn't overweight to start with (though I was well above my racing weight).

Greg doesn't want to make a comeback. He wants people to tell him that he *could* run fast so that he can take credit for his hypothetical times as if they are real.
Greg could be a film writer if he wanted to. He could be the mayor if he made a serious attempt. He could run a decently fast marathon if he trained. To Greg, all these "coulds" are basically the same as actually accomplishing something.

that poster previously made an insulting remark towards my mother on a different thread. (now deleted I believe)

Hey Michael, you are scum, trash and need to be either imprisoned or institutionalized.

I predict you will be incarcerated in your lifetime if it hasn't happened already.
Greg,
Don't waste your time with this nobody Michael (likely related to SS). You've got to start planning for your 'Thon training. You'll need to sit down and do some research to decide what is the best program for you. Then the detailed planning along with deciding how you're going to film your weekly vlog to set yourself apart from all the other running YouTubers out there.

I agree this is a pretty huge opportunity to tell a compelling story--one that, regardless of how it turns out, probably results in many people rethinking how they feel about you. If that aligns with your marathon goal, go for it.
