Maybe Cole Hocker could achieve an 10.5 if he trains exclusively sprinting for a year or two.
Somebody mentioned Rupp earlier in this thread.
Also Bekele.
I’d guess Webb with his 1:43 800 and 27:34 10k. That’s legit range.
Steve Ovett had to have been the closest.

None of them would come close to 10.5 from blocks. Webb might get sub-11. The other two, no way.

Brazier should be capable.
Coe might have 10.8/21.X to his name.
Mu must have 11.XX ability.
10.5 is a long way from 10.9.
Just because some runner can run multiple 12.6's doesnt mean anything when it comes to sub 11.
As usual....ya'll crazy.
You would think a runner would have said something about it or it would have shown up in training log. But it never has......

Not from blocks but certainly with a running start.
Look at their builds and how they move. Some mid distance runners are more smooth and runners run with more power.
Some names that I think of as the most likely to have been able to do this have not come up yet:
-Augustine Choge
-Earl Jones

Is the 5k downhill also? Can we also have a hand timing coach with a fast finger? Look I am ok with a standing start(we can use vid for false starts) but if you need a running start, you dont have 10.5 speed.
I have nondoubt guys like webb close to 11s. The gap between that and 10.5s is huge. Go look at the high school lists to see how fast the drop off is
Anyone trying to do this would probably run their best marks years apart. I knew a guy who ran a 4:20 mile and sub 16 5k in XC freshman year of HS but didn't like the training and moved down in distance. Ended up being pretty good at the 800m too. By senior year he was a 400m runner. Went D3 and was a multiple time All-American sprinter, I think he ran 21.-mid in the 200m. So you would obviously need someone with more talent than this example, but the adaptation can happen.
Maybe sub 11... even that's doubtful without specific training to get a good start.
Steve Ovett has to be the closest, he ran 21.7 for 200 in 1975(also had a 3:57 mile that year) and a 13:25 in 1977.
I think of a 400-800 specialist to reach 10.5. Not many guys like this can run fast 5000s.
Emmanuel korir, cheptegei, jakob, and maybe Michael saruni would all have a shot...actually brazier and nijel Amos would probably have the best shot.
I don’t think brazier could handle 5k training actually so scratch him...Amos and korir probably have the best shot, the question is what kind of pure speed do Jakob and cheptegei have? Jakob’s 6’1, I think if he trained for a year he might be able to hit 10.5.
Runningart2004 has been completely humiliated on these boards many many many times before. 1000% chance there’s at least a handful of the top endurance based 800 runners with great speed, like Coe, could go sub 11 and sub 14. El G I would bet the house on.

Nope.
People always overestimate the 100m potential of distance or middle distance runners.

Obviously you have no clue. 10.9 is possible for someone who can 12.6 8 times without stopping.

Yes, this is likely true.
I think he was ranked the number 1 junior 400m sprinter in the UK when he won a national junior xcountry title.
As there are doubts about Harbig because of the Nazi era use of amphetamines, then Ovett is likely the best example of sprint speed and distance endurance.

And if I was 6 inches taller I'd be 6'2.
These types of questions are asinine and they have been around for as long as the board has been around. Maybe if we give them a few years of training, some time to bulk up and get stronger.....oh wait....:that wasn't the question....
If some distance runner had run 10.9 in training we would all know about it. LR always overvalues distance runners and undervalues sprinting.
How about the other way? Why couldn't a 10.9 sprinter run 13:30? I mean 13:30 is slooooooooooooow compared to 10.9. Surely the opposite must be true?
