Wow this used to be a much bigger race. Just 66 men finishers and 44 women? Only 42 in the men's 5k as well. What happened?
There are small town road races that have 3x as many competitors.
You can thank the people that bastardized the sport. Primarily high school and collegiate coaches.
I don’t think it was well advertised. Also I couldn’t find specifics on prize money for this year

This. Plus it seems like club racing participation has been way down this fall, for example the Grand Prix road races have had a lot fewer competitors. Hopefully things bounce back next year.
Just a fun observation of names in the crowd - (pregnant) Molly Huddle one spot behind Emily Sisson's sister Annika

Could it have something to do with a saturation of races due to them going in person after Covid?
In my area the "talent" is being spread very thin because of the abundance of races.
I times a 5k that typically has a 10k and 5k with a few hundred. It had 19 5kers and they cancelled the 10K.
There were 7 other races that weekend- 3 others simultaneously.
Small field was probably due to the Boston Marathon being two weeks ago and being the same week as the road USATF 25km championships. Many of us in Boston are also rather out of shape because during covid we were required to wear masks at all times outdoors until May of this year.
Marathon was in Boston a couple weeks ago. That plus so many spring races getting pushed to fall = fall races are diluted.
I think the marathon being so recent was part of it, but this has been the trend for several years now. One issue is it doesn't seem like BAA really cares about the race (it was put on by USATF new england this year, and there was no updated info on the BAA site).
