Wtf, massive improvement for him, feels better than Tokyo where Kipchoge after all destroyed the field?
That's a crazy time. He's done nothing to serve notice of that kind of time. Wtf is going on today!
2.03.36
Also, that's the European Record now. People around Mo had been floating the idea he might target the ER next year before he bows out. No way he's getting close to it now
Why do Americans except Rupp suck so much
14thin the all time list.
This European record will not be broken soon...

It's not going to change for a while.

Marathon 2:03:36 Rotterdam (ND)
We have had many, many guys of his profile from 1500m-10000m. I won't include his half bests, since they're not indicative of his marathon abilities, but why can't our guys train like Bashir Abdi in Ethiopia or Kenya at altitude on dirt roads to this level as well, given the bouncy shoes? With comparable abilities, names like Drew Hunter (7:38), Hassan Mead (13:02), Grant Fisher (13:02), Ben True (13:02), Mark Nenow (27:20), Eric Jenkins (27:22), and Ryan Hill (13:05) come to mind and there are many more at that level. Above that level, we have ten guys who have run 13 flat or better at 5000m and ten guys who have run 27:20 or better at 10000m.
He had a great run in Tokyo. Makes sense that he popped a good one. Rotterdam is a very fast course. Jealous at the better weather some of these fall races are getting!

Why shouldn't they ?
Yeah, before the olympic marathon he was one of my picks to hit top three. My reasoning behind this was his previous win at the tokyo marathon, but also his humility and team spirit. Even though he can pull of a win at a marathon major, he will still pace and show up for friends. Before Tokyo he paced Mo Farah to help him qualify at the 10k for the olympics. I think the pacing does good work for externalising the pain you go through and translates well in a marathon. (He also paced mo farah for a hour record, or 20km world record at the van damme diamonc memorial in 2020). And his team spirit shows, with Dutch Nageeye encouraging him to take third. So we have solid training, good suport from colleagues and teammates, the high of the bronze medal - and rotterdam had just about perfect conditions today (plus after the olympics he was clearly the town favourite, and as ghent, his hometown in belgium, doesn't have a marathon rotterdam is his "home marathon")
Kipchoge handily beat Abdi by 1:22 or 82 seconds, all of which came in the final 12k of the race ...
Did Abdi just underperform in the heat of Tokyo or is Eliud clearly still in the 2:00/2:01 shape of his peak?
On the other hand Eliud bested Rupp by about 3:03 in Tokyo, and Rupp managed 2:06:35 in Chicago.
At any rate one can very (very) conservatively place Eliud's fitness in the 2:03:32 (Rupp's time minus 3:03) to 2:02:14 (Abdi's time minus 82 seconds) range... But of course the manner in which Eliud dominated that olympic race suggests he could be even further ahead of his competitors in a less tactical environment...
Where will Eliud run this Spring?
Also, I have to register a moment of silence for Patrick Makau, his sterling 2:03:38 world record, and my youth... There was a time when such a performance seemed an unthinkable triumph, a supreme achievement, and now it's just every other sunday ... (not to say it isn't still those things, but i never imagined just ten years ago that 2:03 clockings would become so regular) .
You. mean Sir. Knighted but not a His Lordship!

The news on abdi stated that he did not adapt well to the time difference this time round in Japan (even though he already traveled there for a marathon) and had lots of troubles sleeping and resting on Olympic marathon week, but he held on, the heat did not seem to be as big of an issue as was just general tiredness.

Can you please elaborate on this idea?

You had quite a few Americans 40 years ago running 2:09 and 2:10. 40 years later and even with the super shoes a 2:10 is seen as very elite for Americans.

Eh, it bothers me a bit that he is going off to far flung places like ethiopia with mo farah. There has been an American that has been to the Farah training camps- Abdi abdirahman- miraculously making the last us marathon team at age 40.
