What is it with baseball that makes winning 60% of your games a "great" season? Winning 100 games is a rarely met benchmark in the MLB. Only three teams did it this year. And yet, winning 100 games means only winning 61.7% of your games.
Looking at best records in MLB this year versus the NFL in 2019 (2020 did not have a 16 game season for all teams).
MLB
107-55 = 66.0%
106-56 = 65.4%
100-62 = 61.7%
95-67 = 58.6%
95-67 = 58.6%
93-69 = 57.4%
NFL
14-2 = 87.5%
13-3 = 81.3%
13-3 = 81.3%
13-3 = 81.3%
12-4 = 75.0%
12-4 = 75.0%
11-5 = 68.8%
The NFL had 10 teams win 60% or more games while MLB only had 3. When you add the NHL and the NBA, we see a similar trend. NHL had 8 teams at 60% or more and the NBA had 11 teams.
So why is baseball so difficult to win 75% or more, which would be 121 games? The MOST games ever won in a season is only 116.
