It's insane that Rupp didn't smash the half AR. His 26:44 is worth a lot closer to 59 mins imo.
There's still time for him to sit down on a few more starting lines and then hit a fast time or two

Rupp was only a few seconds off which at that distance is only a fraction of a second per mile.
Hall 59:43
Rupp 59:47
Korir 59:52
Ritz 60:00
Williams 60:11
Chelenga 60:37
Trafeh 60:39
Estrada 60:51
Curp 60:55
Meb 61:00
Lagat 61:01
Abdi 61:07

update. story here
https://www.letsrun.com/news/2021/10/frank-lara-wants-to-go-sub-6000-and-break-ryan-halls-american-record-in-valencia/Frank Lara is running the Valencia half and said, "The goal in training has been, has been to break 60 minutes, and this is the perfect place to do it.
The American record is definitely in my sights, but if I compete well over the final 5k, I think I'll be really happy at the time, either way. It's the most competitive field I've ever been in and I'm beyond excited."

Wejo I say he can do it!!! Valencia is a fast course I was crap over 10k and bet I could have run 62 on that course in my prime. I give Lara 59:24 Halls record is history!!!
Frank smokes two joints in the morning.
Frank smokes two joints at night.
Frank smokes two joints in the afternoon. It makes him feel alright.
Frank smokes two joints in times of peace, and two in times of war.
Frank smokes two joints before he smokes two joints, and then he smokes two more.
This is the only possible explanation for how Frank Lara thinks he's going to run within a minute of Hall's AR.
I hope he does it but I could see 59:59-60:30
I have seen some of his Sweat Elite videos. I wouldn't count him out. But if he can't wear carbon-plated shoes, it won't happen. Valencia is a super fast magic course.

Anyone else find this self proclaimed narcissistic boasting tiresome?
What's wrong with saying you're chasing the American Record? It's good for the sport. We need more confident and aggressive athletes getting after it and striving to raise the bar.
59:43 is just not that fast. Frank Lara can do it.
Well, the super shoes have been around for a while and Rupp and Korir have come close to the record probably with them, but there is genuine talent on that top ten list, so I can't see a guy I haven't heard of doing it. A two minute drop is huge. More power to him for going after it. It's about time we had guys going to Valencia for times. If Kenyans can fly around the world for quick times, why can't Americans? We should have one of our upper echelon guys go to Copenhagen this fall. That is always very fast as well. With all the higher quality depth we've had at the high school and college levels in recent years, why shouldn't our guys be running mid to low 59? Rupp, of course, had the ability to do it. Why not any number of other guys with the super shoes?

I could see him pip the AR in the right race. Shoe assisted.
He tends to perform relatively consistently and is definitely fit enough for 60 during all of his recent marathons.

Let’s keep in mind the World Record is 57:32
Hall is #142 on the World List.
No chance Frank gets the AR. But props to him for calling his home run shot. Weather looks great Sunday morning, and he'll have plenty of faster runners to key off. Maybe he breaks 61. I'd give that 50/50. Related, Rupp really needs to run a half and get the AR, perhaps Houston in January.
Rupp could have done so years ago, but he doesn’t chase records he likes winning real races by far a much better runner at every single distance than Hall. He might be able to break the record now but years ago easily. Unfortunately American guys now barely better than East African girls.
60:27 for Lara is my Prediction and that is VERY GOOD that is my Prediction, I hope he runs faster than my prediction.
Good for him for announcing it and for setting a goal like that!
Looking at his progression:
He ran a 5k PR of 14:00 in July 2020, then ran 13:40 in Feb 2021, 13:36 in April, and 13:27 in May.
He ran a 28:47 PR in 2019, then a 28:10 in August 2020, before a 27:44 that December. Back in May, he ran a 27:43 leading up to the Trials.
His 61:40 is from January 2020. That was almost a year before his 27:44. When he ran 61:40, his 5k PR was 14:11 and his 10k PR was 28:57
It looks like he had some breakthrough sometime after the summer of 2020. Going by his best races, he seems to get better as the distance increases. When he ran it in January 2020, his half marathon PR was BY FAR his best performance. Now, his 10k PR equates to a 60:50 according to WorldAthetics tables. If he's better at long distances (which I think he is), then it's more than conceivable that he can drop below 60. Maybe not likely with the information we know, but not totally out of the picture.
I also took the liberty of looking at every American who's run faster than him in the HM since the Rupp ran 57:47. At the top, there's Rupp and Korir under 60, then 11 guys who beat him at Houston (when he ran 61:50). Of the people who beat him, the only people who have had a better performance than 27:43 are Sam Chelanga (27:08 in 2010), Diego Estrada (27:30 in 2015), and Haron Lagat (8:15 SC in 2011). As an aside, Jared Ward's 2:09 in Boston is rated just below Lara's 10k performance, but I think 6th in the Olympics is worth a lot more than 27:43.
I think he's gonna have a great performance in Valencia. From his results, I think he probably is best suited for the half marathon distance and I'm hoping he has a breakthrough at Valencia. My prediction is that he breaks the AR. 59:40 or so.
What the hell. I think I will jump on a plane and go for the American record too.
I will also be gunning for Ryan Hall's record tomorrow
This is so disrespectful to Ryan. Gather round and listen up, kiddos. Even though he’s become a clown with the chemical-assisted buff body and the cringey bro persona, Ryan is the best we’ve ever had.
I’ve coached HS and college in CA for 35 years. I’ve seen em all come through the pipeline, and Ryan is the best. I can’t stress enough how rare it is for a westerner to move like that kid. Pure silk. It was a shock to see him struggle for the bulk of college and kind of a “finally” thing to see him start to win at the very end and for the rest of the country to realize what we in CA knew since 1999–this kid is VERY special. I’ve said this previously and I’ll say it again: if Ryan ran 2:05 non-legal and 2:06 legal, that’s the best we can hope for. The only person who has ever come close is Rupp in super shoes (so add 2? minutes).
A USA born-n-raised male running 2:06 in old school flats like asics hyperspeeds has come along exactly ONCE in this nation’s history. Appreciate it and respect it.
