I lived in many apartments during my late teens to early 30s. With them, I experienced:
-Noise through walls and floors
-An upstairs neighbor with a drum set
-An upstairs neighbor with toddlers and a dog that would run around all day and night, early mornings
-Major water damage from an upstairs unit that leaked through my ceilings and caused my bathroom ceiling to cave in
-Multiple instances of landlords or management entering without permission or with less than 24 hours' notice
-A super obnoxious retiree neighbor who would constantly stop me whenever she saw me in the halls and talk/gossip/complain my ear off
-No yard, no real open space
-Cockroaches
-Mice
-Restrictions on pets, or crazy fees to have one
-Lack of real autonomy in designing my space (no painting, no major holes in walls, no changing flooring or appliances, etc)
Now I live in a house. There are some things that suck (home ownership has its own host of responsibilities and difficulties). I've had to learn the house and understand what its quirks and maintenance needs are. But it's mine. It's away from other people. We have a yard that we can do whatever the f*ck we want in. A porch. A fire pit. Acreage for the dogs to run around. Don't have to go into the basement or a laundromat for coin operated washing machines. No noisy neighbors. I gutted a room and painted a bunch of walls and no one can stop me. I set up a home gym and no one could tell me what I could or could not bring into the space.
It's not all flowers and sausages, but it's a huge leg up in QOL, for me at least.
