I've always been puzzled by how the UK selectors pick athletes to get funding or not, but can anyone explain the difference between Olympic finalist Andrew Butchart (who has been removed from funding despite finishing 11th in his Olympic final in Tokyo) and Marc Scott (who was 14th in his Olympic final).
Or between Eilish McColgan, who receives only podium level funding but finished 9th in her Olympic final and has one of the best years known to athletes, and Jaz Sawyers, who finished last in her Olympic final and rarely wins anything and realistically is unlikely to, even at the Commonwealth Games? McColgan was memorably dropped from any funding at all last time around and only got in on appeal. Why are UKA so reluctant to support this highly talented and consistent athlete with huge marathon potential and holder of many recently broken British records?
Why does Andy Pozzi stay on Olympic funding despite constantly bombing in finals yet someone like Matthew Hudson-Smith who does the same, get dropped?
Why does Melissa Courteny-Bryant, who has never broken 4.01 for the 1500m and had an awful 2021 with only 3 races, stay on funding?
We all know that Lynsay Sharp is remaining funded because UKA don't want to be accused of maternity discrimination, but is it also because its a consolation prize to her boyfriend Butchart for being dropped?
Interested to hear the views of those more informed than me, because from where I stand, its one of those things that looks odd, sounds odd and probably is completely illogical.
