I just came off a tibia stress fracture and have gotten back to racing. Mine was upper tibia. I had shin splints for a few months and then pain to where I would limp if I tried to run. It fluctuated a lot but I stopped running after the limping and got an MRI as soon as possible. It’s a frustrating process but I would highly suggest getting one. You may have tendinitis, a developing fracture, or a full fracture. I think the best practice is to run on soft surfaces, roll, ice and cross train until you can get into the doctors. If it gets worse take a few days off. I’m sorry you’re going through this, it’s tough but you can get through any injury by being smart.
I'm so sorry about your injury, but glad you're back! The thing is... I don't quite know what shin splints feel like - I thought they were like a dull growing pain-like pain on the front of the shin, usually appearing on both, but I guess I could be wrong. I thought mine might be a tendon issue or PTT as it's been very mild, and some runs a month ago, I don't think I felt it at all. I've had it for two months and it hasn't gotten better but it hasn't gotten worse (until Mon/or Tues - today felt ok). At the start of the run it's not too bad but I can "feel it". If we do a lot of stop starting, sometimes the first few steps are rough and it feels maybe slightly worse at the end of the run.
I can definitely run my tibia against something or touch a specific spot and sorta feel pain, but when I'm running I feel like pain is sometimes lower - could this still be a fracture then? I'm fairly confident I could continue running through it for at least 3 weeks but who knows.... it's bizarre.
