Ok, so I was wondering if it is necessary to run a designated 'long run' when training for a 10k as long as there is significant amounts of aerobic work already in the programme. high volume of easy running on easy days, cross training a few hours a week and long workouts provides a substantial stimulus for aerobic growth and being able to run at tempo pace and faster more often surely is neuromuscularly preferable. A long run takes a lot out of the body, and sufficient recovery time must be provided at the expense of other workouts.
I am not against long runs - I really enjoy them, but long easy slogs doesn't seem very event specific. Surely running 15mi at 7:15 pace is not as beneficial for the 33min 10km athlete as running 9mi at 5:50 pace (with 1mi wucd either side for 11mi tot), or running a long continuous fartlek session totalling around 11mi.
