Did you know before the 1980s the US led the world in manufacturing and steel production.
Japan produced superior steel and innovative goods with cheaper prices and began establishing a large manufacturing presence in the US.
The US Government balked, forced Japan to devalue the Yen, and demanded restructuring, low cost supplier (Japan) to distribution company (USA) hierarchical relationship to roadblock Japan out of dominating the US landscape.
The US expected Japan to start buying US goods to level the trade imbalance but Japan refused to be bullied and moved manufacturing to their massive subsidiary operations in Taiwan, Korea, and mainland China.
Goods labelled as Made-In-China, Made-In-Taiwan, Made-In-Korea to avoid US scrutiny flooded the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.
US manufacturing continued to tailspin to zero.
Thus the US Service Economy was born that we suffer from today.
Instead of US politicians and Wall Street crying foul and admitting they've been outsmarted by Japan they chose instead to victimize their own American middle and lower class by created a Service Industry Class of underpaid full time laborers with no medical insurance, no retirement plans, no dental benefits, and so on.
Happy to see the end of that era.
