How often does a coach who has the best program in the state, interview for head coach position at a competing school for the sole purpose of gaining intel?
Is this a greasy move?

I have never heard of that. The negatives out weigh any positives “Coach Jones is looking to leave” etc What kind of intel would you learn (# of scholarships / budget) who cares - you are already beating them
Toured the offices, town and facility and met the team.
was somewhat interviewed by the team.
greasy
We get beat by Coach 430's team every year, or we used to. Despite getting the best recruits from all over the greater Dallas area, we'd lose to these guys every year. Before I moved up to the head coach position here, while still an assistant, I interviewed with Coach430 and learned his secrets. Pogo sticking, trips to the gulf coast, hopping on one leg, special massage cream, you name it - we do it better and harder. Instead of pogo sticking, we train in moonboots, instead of the gulf, we go to the arctic, etc. Now we beat those guys every race and are about to pick up our 3rd consecutive conference title.
