LS/DR: Hosted an 8th grade XC meet, 2km. Kids (esp girls) were walking after 300m. 50% of the boys started walking after 500m. How do you get kids to be more active and join a MS XC/Running Club?
I coach HS in a pretty urban area. We brought back hosting an 8th grade XC meet for all the schools in the city (9). Told each school to bring 5-10 boys and girls to race 2km over grass and some hills. Some schools only brought 3 kids in total.
After 300m, 50% of the girls started walking. After 800m even before the first hill, 75% of girls were walking. After 400m, 50% of boys started walking.
The girls race was won in 8:02 (9:30 for 2nd), and the boys race top 10 were spread 8:01-8:45. We won’t see these kids do XC and TF in HS because they’re all year round soccer players.
We are going to start a MS XC/Running Club for the city, with the hopes to build the HS team, but also to bring a health conscious mindset to kids in the city. How can I really push for participation in the sport? And how is it times have changed so badly to a point where most kids don’t want to go outside and do anything?
