I see you have a soft spot for Alabama. That happens sometimes. Did you ever live there? Just curious. I won't excoriate you no matter what you say there. I agree that Gulf Shores is a nice place to take a vacation. HOWEVER, as I said before, there are just too many racist redneck people with backwards thinking there for me to ever want to live there or spend much time there. Just too many hateful people...again, that doesn't mean they all are...just means too many are.
No, I've been living in the state just to the West for 19 years, and enjoying it mightily. As an ex-NYer, I'm quite familiar with life in both places--metro East Coast, Deep South--and I'm also well aware that many people who crack on the South not only haven't lived there but haven't even visited there. Those who do visit, in my view, are often surprised, and pleased. "The South" and "Alabama," as things, aren't just one thing. There are many micro-regions, many oases. Birmingham, too, has its bohos, its great restaurants, its weekend activities. Even a minute's worth of research will make this apparent:

Getting your ears blown out at Talladega isn't everybody's idea of a great time--although you'll suddenly understand what NASCAR is all about in a way that watching a race on TV doesn't begin to communicate.
As for the race thing, raised by one Af-Am poster: black people have been flooding back INTO the South for two or three decades now. Reverse migration is a major thing.

Great town. I had a friend who taught for years at the U. of Montevallo, which is art of greater Birmingham. He ended up moving on, but life was sweet and he enjoyed it--and he was an Ivy grad with many metro tastes.
As for the "too many racist redneck people with backward thinking": sh-t, you can find that in south Boston, in Queens, in parts of Philly and Baltimore. I consider myself exquisitely attentive to overt manifestations of racism--not because I'm a SJW, just because I intensely dislike people who broadcast such attitudes. I've lived, worked, and traveled in the South with my mixed family (wife & son)--including half a dozen vacations in and through Alabama. If things were so horrendous down here, you would think we'd have to be constantly on guard, ready for the next slight. The truth is, we have never been overtly disrespected. Trust me, I'm looking for it! Hasn't happened.
So I'm skeptical of those who haven't lived in the Deep South and perhaps haven't ever set foot in Mississippi or Alabama telling me how bad things are. I know the statistics; statistics don't tell you much about the actual texture of day-to-day life. Nor does the news, which jumps on specific kinds of easily digestible stories, because they monetize well, and leaves the rest alone.
