I used to be “fast” in high school, easily hitting 2:30 800m in indoor and outdoor even with low volume mileage and extreme under training. Running was easy. Now, after a nearly ten-year hiatus (running a couple times a week but not much) I’ve recommitted to running and range from 40-60 miles a week for the past year. I’m training for my first marathon and gradually seeing improvements but I’m relatively slow still. Will I ever be fast again?? My tempo pace is 8:00/mile ish. I think that used to be my easy pace. Help! Was speed just a matter of my youth or is it possible to reach the same fitness / speed I was with once capable of again, even as a now-30-year-old.
