No they do not. Coaches have a job to do but they don't need to get excessive credit in most cases. The athlete will either reach full potential or listen to a coach who screws them up. Reaching full potential is the coach simply doing their job but there's a lot of professional incompetence in that industry.

The alpha corrects the mistake of the beta or the athlete gets worse or even injured.
I don't know what you mean by beta and alpha but certain athletes will respond better to the personalities of coaches.
I had some athletes who needed a "kick a$$ and take no prisoners" coach which I wasn't. I also had athletes who responded better to a more cerebral laid back personality but I've only coached on the HS level.
With this in mind not every coach is cut out to be the coach of a powerhouse team and not every athlete should attend a killer team.
