I don't see how it could be a PR gimmick. Most of the people even aware of the race are people like us.

It may be questionable how fast Kipchoge can run a 5000 now, but it would be questionable if Bekele would even finish one.
This is why he's too slow.
Maybe somebody can shed some light on this.
Let's say that there's a 20:13 second 5k runner. They choose ro run in the 20 minute 5k pace group. They are not allowed to pass their pacer as per the rules. They run a great race, stay with the pacer, are feeling awesome with 100m to go. Kipchoge closes in. The runner cannot pass the pacer lest they get DQ'ed.
Are race organizer actually going to limit runners abilities to succeed in earning a bib by putting Eliud close enough to catch the pacers? Will they tell him to not catch the pacers, only eliminating those who fall off the pace?
If the race is staggered in a way that everyone finishes around the same time, I can't imagine Kipchoge passing passing pacers, eliminating entire corrals of runners who cannot pass their pacers.
I feel like I'm missing something, please let me know if I'm being dumb.
post race bump
He ran 14:25. Around 1,000 people beat him

Where did you find the results?
Just a report, not full results

Ha, guess what, he simply ran it at his marathon WR pace. 14’25” for 5K is the exact same pace as running 42.195K in 121’39”. Smart of him to not try to go all out just for a PR gimmick.
How much was the handicap that they gave Kipchoge? Like how fast did that last 1000 people have to run?
1000 days to the marathon and 1000 runners 'beat' Kipchoge to win entry.
It was all a carefully staged gimmick. He was probably told to run 14:30 in order to get those numbers
I find it pretty funny to look back on some of the comments pre-"race". It's clear that a lot of people thought that 1) Kipchoge was going to go all-out and run something around 13:15, and/or 2) the race was going to be a somewhat straight-up competition, maybe with Kipchoge starting at the back, and the "winners" would be half a dozen sub-15 guys.
I don't know if anyone who posted those things really believed what they posted, but it would be terrible publicity in this day and age if no "regular people" (or, indeed, women) beat Kipchoge. The event was never going to be set up that way. Rather, I think all those predictions were fundamentally aspirational. There's pretty much nothing that we at LetsRun would like more than Kipchoge chasing down a bunch of sub-elite guys, bragging rights at stake, everyone giving it their all.
It's not at all how the sport works nowadays, if it even ever did. It's not how the world works, either. But sometimes it's worth it to close our eyes and pretend.
I think the guy in the photograph running with Kipchoge is Yoann Durand, who recently ran 2:09+ in the Paris marathon.
I heard from French people that this time trial event was somewhat chaotic with a lot of French people giving false times to gain a better advantage in the event. In addition, the organizers had promised many athletes that if they placed well they would have a right of entry to the Olympic games marathon in 2024 but what they (the amateur joggers) didn’t understand is that the “promise” was not for a direct entry into the Olympic games marathon but rather a side event either before or after the Main event.
I actually ran the race and it was a total farce. Like ridiculous levels of farce. In a pursuit style race the most important thing is to give the proper delay to slower runners to make it a race, right? Yeah well the two fastest pace groups 4 & 5 were passed by Kipchoge within the first km of the race. We only had the right to pass our pacers after halfway. So none of these groups had even a chance to qualify. There is a dude who ran 15:20 and didn't.
I was in group 3 which was for 25-30min 5k pace. In their initial communication they said that there will be pacers that can't be surpassed the whole way. So I went into that group thinking I can follow the 25min pacer but 20min (next group) was too fast. Morning of the race we get there they announce we can pass pacers at 2k now? Ok weird but whatever.
Then gun goes off and the pacers go out way faster than 25 min pace. Ok fine I hang on. Give it my all and run 21:30 and Kipchoge passes me with 100m to go.
Safe to say if you give pace group 4-5 no chance (Kipchoge started less than a minute behind them) and every other group had to surpass their pace group by 10min to get a spot then your organization is just god awful and rewards those that cheated when signing up for a pace group (no pace justification was necessary). They even sent us an email demanding we be honest with our pace groups.
You know who are the people who qualified? Those that ran a 22min 5k when putting themselves in the 35min corral. And the ones from all their sponsor teams that started way ahead of everyone and even finished before Kipchoge.
So the whole thing was an embarassment and if you check the @Paris2024 social media accounts everyone is as outraged as me. I paid travel and a hotel just to never have been given a chance. Deplorable organization against any olympic spirit of fairness.
E..g here is what is now known as the photo pf shame in french running circles. Kipchoge passing the last pace group at km 1 before they were even allowed to pass the pacer of their pace group. So to say this was a desaster would be actually too kind.
Every single honest runner who was in the right pace group got screwed. I guess paris 2024 will be for liars and cheaters. The Olympic spirit?!?

I also ran it and completely agree with runningchick, so many things where set up completely at random. The 10-12 kph group pacers went out in around 4:17 (which is 14 kph) for the first km, which is obviously very good for people who could have run faster than 12 kph but far from what was declared.
Also it's crazy how small of a gap they gave to the fastest group. I calculated the gaps based on the max speeds allowed and thought my group would start around 10 minutes before Kipchoge. When I ended up running 20:17 (I thought I was in 22 shape, so I put myself in this group to have a chance) and saw Kipchoge crossing the line about 1 minute after me I thought he must have run a ridiculous time. Then turns out he just started 20 seconds after the last group.
At least it appears they acknowledged the mistake and gave the spot to 200 people from each of the last two groups. Also the course was 150-200m short.
Agree with those posters above who were there. I was in airlock 4 and got passed with about 600-700m to go. It was tough having to stick with the pacers for the 1st 2k and being forced to run 20:00 pace (for our group) before being let loose over the last 2.9k (like others have said, course was about 3 miles, not 5k). I did the math and to have beaten him based on his stagger, I would have had to run 3:06/k over the remainder of the race after the pacers fell off when our pace group's ability level was 4:00/km. Luckily the organizers came to their senses, thanks in part to the swift and harsh outrage on social media and let in 200 people for the 2024 marathon from each of the last 2 pace groups who had absolutely no shot of beating Kipchoge based on the stagger he was given. I got the email that night saying I was in the top 200 and I'm thrilled that they made that decision
Would be nice if this had been televised.
