Bingo. I think it was Tyler Cowen who proposed that renters might actually vote to make a place crappier so that rents would go down.
You can blame the tech industry if you want, but the real problem is that the entire Bay Area encouraged tons of commercial development and new jobs, while restricting residential development. The main reason tech people don't plan to stay is because the cost of living is too high.

Only 23% of rapes are reported to police so estimates are pure speculation. Rape is usually a he said-she said....there are no witnesses, dificult to prosecute.
I don't automatically believe the Women, many acusations are found to be false so statistics are guesses.

So few rapes are reported and the ones that are reported often fail to be prosecuted. So, giving harsher sentences to the few people that are caught doesn't do much. There needs to be non-carceral solutions.
And then you get cases like this one. FWIW I've met Mike. Whats worse about this case is that the police and the DA withheld evidence that would have cleared him. Think about that the next time you say it couldn't have happened to you.

I think we should really feel bad for Walgreens. This is the end for them, with nothing to replace them. This country is ruined.
Typical response. If the State was predominantly run by the Right, that'd be the story you'd be sticking with.
NO, it's not extremely unlikely that the issue is the Democrats who don't give sh*t about shoplifting, it IS the issue. Why do you think police are told NOT to go if it's under a certain amount? Where do you think those instructions came down from?
You're probably a very nice person in real life, I have zero doubt about that. But you are dead wrong on why it's happening. To not understand the who and why of what's happening there is really not that hard to figure out. If it were a predominantly conservative state, you'd already have the answer;)
Wrong? Heck I am wrong 6 times before I get out of bed in the morning and I can admit it, but I'm not wrong on this subject. This is the liberal policies of the extreme left in California as what other state would allow people to do this (yes there's theft in other states, but not to this level)? Why is it not happening all over New York?
Enough. No one is changing someone so extremely left so what's the point. Flagpole? I wouldn't waste my time on him, he's a narcissistic liar.

The case demonstrates why prison and measuring justice in terms of jail time is flawed. If politicians prioritize increasing incarceration not only does it ignore the harm caused by the majority of incidents that never make it to that stage; it ends up encouraging the police to do anything to increase the number of prisoners.

No it shows why DAs should be held accountable for deliberately convicting an innocent man. The "victim" ended up serving something like 6 years.

I'm going to presume who you do and don't believe will largely come down to the racial make-up of the people involved in the incident.
I'm guessing your default stance is to believe (and sympathise) with the rapist, but that changes based on the above.

Yes, I know. He got a hefty settlement from the City, bought an apartment in Riverdale, but always seemed a little lost. He wasn't a perfect angel, he's from the Bronx after all, but he wasn't a rapist. He was trying to do good things with his money like helping his heroin addict brother, but I don't think he was making progress on that. What was going on in his heart is what mattered. He tried.
Anyway, there have been hundreds of false conviction based on proprietorial misconduct. All prisoners claim to be innocent, but the reality is some of them actually are.

Fukkng autocorrect!

This country is run by the same type of morons.

Of course the DA should be accountable. If people really think the solution to rising crime is more incarceration they're wrong. The police don't solve much crime and more frequently than you think, end up putting away innocent people!

Only if you use the idiotic leftist definition of rape which includes consensual sex you regret later and cat calling as rape...
No. But instead of mere speculation, here is some data, which indicates 0.6% serve. Even if you reduce it to the 38.4% reported to police and ask what happens there, only 14.8% of rapes reported to police result in arrest. Of the 5.7% of the total that result in arrest, only 19% are referred for prosecution. At that point conviction rates are pretty high but only a bit more than half serve time, and you're down to 6 out of a 1000, or 6/384 reported to police and 6/57 arrested for rape. There are false accusations and merely questionable disagreements about what happened where no one intended to force sex without consent, but there are also a lot of actual rapes that are unprosecuted.
"Prosecution rate
Based on correlating multiple data sources, RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) estimates that for every 1,000 rapes, 384 are reported to police, 57 result in an arrest, 11 are referred for prosecution, 7 result in a felony conviction, and 6 result in incarceration."
