800m is a real T&F event wrote:
You don't get it! Ajee Wilson and Mary Cain were teenagers at the same or similar years. Cain was only slightly slower than Wilson as a teenager, 800m. From Wilson's teenage years, Wilson has gained weight, muscle weight. Mary Cain never should have been training with near-starving 1500m to 5000m runners. Mary Cain should have been pumping iron, reducing body fat, plyometrics, sprint coordination drills, 50m sprints & 150m sprints, as a teenager improving her 200m, 400m & 800m performances as a strong roughly (120 to 125) pound 800m runner.
That might or might not be true (I do think you have a interesting point) BUT Mary obviously wanted to be a 1500 meter runner herself, even made a WC final coming straight out of college.
Imagine the "abuse" if Nike had try to tell her then despite that she wasn't qualified to train with their 1500/5000 squad.
Teen prodigies sometimes win too much and/or too easy during childhood/highschool/college - not all of them benefit in the long run from that. Later when reach the level where victories don't come easy every other week they're not prepared to handle that, haven't devolved the necessary work ethic, can't be arsed to do the hard word and hours to take themselves permanently from prodigy to pro.
