Definitely went out too fast in NYC...first mile was sub-7 over the Verrazano, followed by 6:16!! coming down the bridge into Brooklyn... Didn't realize how good I could feel with the taper, almost made the same mistake in Chicago, but made much more of an effort to slow down this time around...
Thanks for the ideas around more optimal training sessions...will have to give those a shot next cycle for sure... It's interesting you advocate for a shorter buildup, suppose having a more consistent base and just running more throughout the year could do more to contribute to increased fitness at this point
Thanks for the reply.
Definitely try to be consistent and shorten the build up. When you are in good 5k shape with 15 - 16 mile long runs here and there you are able to get into very marathon shape in 8 - 10 weeks.
Do not race a 5k 1 week out. Try a 10k race 2 weeks out.
Do not taper too much. You have intensity, density of workouts and volume. I would try to only cut volume. You will feel snap in your legs but rested, strong and confident. I usually did a very little workout 3 days out. I know every person is different, but perhaps you got stale by cutting the intensity too much and only jogging.
Example: When you usually do 2-3 hard efforts every week I would still advise something roughly like this for the taper:
2nd last week: Tuesday 5 x 600 at 10 - 5kish pace, Thursday 8 - 10 miles MP, Saturday longish easy
last week: Monday 5 x k at a bit slower than MP to a bit quicker than MP, Thursday 5 x 400 10k pace...
Just some food for thoughs.
A nice thread in my opinion!
