Something that might have been missed or discounted by a site that is clearly dominated by men (no shade, just facts):
Jordan clearly has a deep emotional connection to the sport. Evidenced not only by stories about her now- deceased mother's influence on her running, but also in the fact that she dressed in Lakers colors for the Trials (Kobe was a great influence on her) and she was wearing Boston blue and yellow on Monday. She has been trying (and I suppose recently failing to use these sort of connections to inspire her in races because she cares so deeply about her job. Seeing those things make me really respect her, but it is possible to actually care too much.
Now before y'all freak: I'm not saying that completely literally. I mean that, now the expectations are there because of what she achieved in the past. She is not racing carefree like she did early in her marathon career because now people expect her to achieve comparable results. If she is continuously beating herself mentally in races (which I have to believe is the case because someone who smashed it at Boston does not just then run a few minutes ahead of a positively-splitting, partially injured me) then dedicating and injecting each race with inspiration of the things that are most salient to you as a person can cause you to kind of over-instill the race itself with meaning. This is a problem when race after race starts to go south, the results begin to define you because you have imbued them with a purpose that defines you.
Of course I am NOT arguing that people shouldn't dedicate their runs to loved ones, to raise money for worthy causes, etc. I am only suggesting (not even totally convincing myself but still putting it out there for consideration) that Jordan has maybe gotten a little TOO deep inside of her head, the recent biggest days of professional career were too intertwined with the essence of who she is outside of running, and that I agree with others here (and obviously per Insta she does too) that a reset is needed. Then, she can find joy in racing again. Yes, running in that elite women's pack was difficult for everyone in it but it is bada$$ and cool but Jordan looked really miserable from the start (from what I could see on the early portion of the recorded broadcast, no idea about later because they never showed her after she lost contact with the group). Maybe, in time, if and when she makes a return to competitive running, she will find that she does not need to be as mentally reliant on her "why", the joy of racing will once again be enough.
