Yea he needs to go to one of the flat European marathons where a dozen break 2:05. Enough of these slow US marathons. Time for him to prove he’s the best American all-time.

Why? You don't just need a phalanx of pacers as you get older. He's one of the most experienced distance runners on the planet. If anyone doesn't need pacers, it's Rupp.
But Kipchoge employed a phalanx for pacers for sib sub 2hr projct. But you are probably right, Kipchoge is no Rupp - Rupp is one of the most experienced distance runnrs on the planet after all.

Exactly! Rotterdam would be a good choice. Line up the pacers. Rotterdam is usually a time trial rather than a race anyway.

I agree. Run a marathon in Europe and set an American record. With a large pack of competitors, perhaps a 2:03-2:04.
Agree. He's a big guy (relatively) and needs a cool weather race to get the AR. For that he needs to go outside the US; nothing here is a safe weather race anymore, even Houston is risky.

This is a funny post. Yeah he's magically going to run a 2:04 when he can't manage to break 2:06 in his prime. He's getting slower, not faster.
Did you watch the race? The guy just ran 2:06 in 75 degrees. John Kellogg said the weather slowed them down by 3 minutes or so. I’ll let you do the math.

There has never been a race ever where more than 7 men broke 2:05. The only World Marathon Major that had more than 3 break 2:05 was Boston 2011 when Ryan Hall ran 2:04:58 for 4th.
Wait, what?!?! I had surgery for Haglund's Deformity as well... At age 49 I might add... Who said you can't run short and fast after that??
Rupp should go to London or Rotterdam. He'll go to Boston & will then do Eugene so the next fast marathon he does is maybe something in the fall of 2022 off of a short build-up. We might never see the AR if he then goes back to Boston the following spring. We might see him at Boston in both 2022 or 2023. I bet we see one decent year & a sub-2:05 for him (like Hall) but he never gets it on a record eligible course.
Confession.

I had a complete Achilles tear in college soccer, was able to run a sub 2:15 800m a couple years later. Not elite (I’m a woman), but I had no issues with speed work.
And after my Haglund’s surgery (other side), I was no worse for the wear.

You’re a pretty tough customer, huh?
With the bouncy shoes and all the recovery technologies Rupp has access to he should just run a marathon every 2-3 months. Why not at this point in his career. There’s nothing to save it for. With that said For 2022 I think Houston (with Nike paid pacers to attempt an American record) in January, Boston in April, Eugene worlds in July, and Chicago in October. He seems to run well off little rest.
He should wear a neon wig, really long fingernails, and then talk crap and test positive for weed. It would get him more attention.

Here's the math. He's never run under 2:06. He's had plenty of opportunities to do so. Now you say the only reason he didn't this time was the weather? What about all the other times he failed to break 2:06?

You're one of those guys that knows the answer but wants to troll anyway. But to spell it out for everyone...
Rupp has run 11 marathons, almost all of them un-paced.
Two of them, including his first, were The US Trials Championships in which he won both, EASILY.
Two more of them were in the Olympics, where both were hot and humid, and he came away with a 3rd and 8th.
Two Bostons, a second place, sub 2:10, and then infamous DNF in the cold and windy rain...
Four Chicago, where he won his first, ran a 2:06 injured, then a DNF the next year after his first race in a year+, and another 2:06:3X in what most would say was windy and warm (and not paced).
One Prague, where he set his PR but that was only a couple of weeks after the DNF in Boston, and he was injured there as well.
So you can see there hasn't been a "perfect storm" for Rupp to run sub 2:05.
But I agree in that he needs to do it to prove it. He never did reach what we thought was his 5000 potential. Maybe it will be the same with the marathon and half marathon. The half is one in which I really think he left super fast times on the table.
