2:06:35 in 73 degrees with 70 percent humidity. Less than a minute from Khalid’s AR.
Where/when could he run an AR? London is now a year off.

Houston ?

He would need a phalanx of pacers like Sara Hall had today.
Solid run today.
If I'm him I do Boston in spring and then Eugene Worlds. His best days look behind him but in a Worlds marathon with limited number of Africans he has a shot moreso than in Chicago or New York next fall.
He could even do NY in November.
Go for sub-2 at CIM
I think he should do indoor track to try and get some speed back, then run the marathon at the World Championships in July.

His race today indicates he still has a sub 2:05:00 in him on a flat course on a day in the 45-55 degree range, but the clock is ticking.
What he needs is a flattish record eligible course by next Spring. Houston is an option, but he would need pacers that can run 2:04 pace through 16 miles.
Boston is not record eligible. Either is NYC, but in any event I don't see him ever running there because it is not a Nike race and the NYRR went out of their way to diss Salazar.
Try for sub 2:04 and bang it out. Go for the AR that will untouchable for a long time. That will be his legacy.

He had achilles surgery several years ago. Anything less than a 10k would shred all that repair work they did.
Rupp needs to run a flat, cool european marathon in the spring. I forget what's in the spring. London, Berlin, Rotterdam...

Dumb question, but is that the longest allowable distance for pacers in WMM marathons or any marathons? I thought pacers had to run shorter (13.1)? Or does it vary based on marathon?
Western States

I'd pick one of Boston or Eugene. Then he could still do Chicago next October, but I think doing both Boston and Eugene would wear him out too much for a good Chicago effort next year.

They can run as long as they like.

Why? You don't just need a phalanx of pacers as you get older. He's one of the most experienced distance runners on the planet. If anyone doesn't need pacers, it's Rupp.
‘22:
January - Houston 1/2 Marathon
March/April - Tokyo or Rotterdam (AR attempt)
Late July - Eugene WC Marathon
Mid-September - GNR 1/2
Late November - Gobble Gobble...
(Maybe replace the last two with one Chicago)
‘23:
February/March - Some podunk local half where he can win in 61:40, or maybe the Gate River Run 15k
April - Boston
June/July - U.S. Championship 10k
October - Chicago
‘24:
January/February - Olympic Trials Marathon
August - FIFTH OLYMPICS
Then he’ll be 38, and either retire or collect 1-2 more big paydays at domestic marathons, and then retire.

I agree. Run a marathon in Europe and set an American record. With a large pack of competitors, perhaps a 2:03-2:04.

With all the money Nike has they simply need to pay for the pacers. They could even pick some small time but fast / good conditions American marathon. They would just need to buy him the pacers.
Rupp should do a mini-build up and run Houston Half Marathon and then use that to transition into a marathon buildup for Rotterdam.
That gives him a block where he's some injecting some speed into his legs, then he can carry over that speed into marathon training and capitalize at on a flat course with cool weather
I'd love to see him run a spring marathon in Europe and take a real shot at the AR but my guess is that Boston will make him an offer he can't refuse. He'll probably run Boston in April, Eugene WC in July, and then Chicago or NYC in the fall.
