Just an idea in my head.
We don't need linear progression beyond say the first year or two of running. There are other forms of progression. So here is my idea:
This would be a schedule for a road racer planning on races from 5-10k.
Week 1: down week, easy running
Week 2: mileage, hard aerobic runs or tempo, plus short sprints/strides.
Week 3: One workout at 5K pace/effort, One workout at 5K pace/effort.
Week 4: One workout at 5K pace/effort, One workout at 5K pace/effort.
Repeat indefinitely. Allows you to race year round.
Mileage will vary. As you progress throughout the year total mileage will look like a wave. Week 1-2 will be higher mileage. Week 3-4 will be low to moderate. Example for someone used to running 100mi a week at the highest
80, 90, 70, 70, 90, 100, 80, 80, 100, 110, 90, 90, 110....then back down the ladder. Then repeat for a total of 52 weeks.
Comments, concerns?
