-Consume nitric oxide (beets) before the race (something like Beet Elite, Super Beets, Alt Red, SNAP organic, for example). Try it out before the race though to make sure whatever you use agrees with you. Also, follow the label instructions if you decide to try it out.
-Consume some caffeine before the race, but don't over consume. A lot of gels contain caffeine. Again, try it out before the race to ensure you can stomach it.
-Come up with a few short mantras/phrases prior to the race that you can repeat to yourself during the race. Mantras can help you stay focused, or help you get though painful sections of the race. Examples might include repeating "relax and roll," during the first mile to keep things relaxed and fluid, "attack and endure," during the second mile when the race starts to take shape, and "keep the pedal down" during the last mile. The mantras have to be your own though.
