I’m not sure how many fellow Floridians, specifically in the high school ranks, there are on this board… but things have been heating up. IMG who is ineligible for the FHSAA state series continues to be ranked #2 in the state, somehow. Cambridge Christian, coached by a man who singlehandedly obtained the highest FHSAA fine(s) and allegedly caused a school to close its doors is ranked at #1 in the state as a 1A school. The issue at hand is that the athletes this man coaches have been hand-picked by him as the #1 runners at their previous schools and already top-tier state athletes, and then they unenroll full-time from their current school, bumping down to (I believe) 3 classes, at that school. The remainder of their classes they take on Florida Virtual (FLVS). The problem comes in that somehow the system has been manipulated that they then get to compete for Cambridge Christian HS, even though they don’t take a single class at the school.
So rightfully so, you have some local HS coaches (most of which who have seen this recruiting for on first-hand) fairly upset about how the FHSAA allows this to go on. Brandon from Milesplit comes to this coach’s aide and chastises the coaches for not reflecting on their own programs and why these kids are leaving. Then some parents of these kids who have made these transfers come to the defense of the decisions they have made for their parents.
Now, FL doesn’t separate public from private as some states do for HS athletics, so that may leave the door open for some wonky situations. But with covid shining light on this whole virtual school phenomenon or even a return to homeschooling, are we now headed down a pathway where the traditional “this is the school you go to, this is where you compete” soon to be a thing of the past?
