Hello superhuman ladies and gentleman, mere mortal here wanting to share my excitement today at cracking the 80 second barrier for — hold your breath — the 400m distance!
In my forties, started running last thanksgiving, and current fun goal is to be within 2x of world record speeds all the way up to 10K. For a while I could never explain my following weird numbers with such a sharp PB drop from 100m to 400m and then a smooth decline thereafter for longer distances.
100m: 14’ flat/3’45” pace (likely 13’ with fresh legs)
400m: 100’/6’40” pace, TODAY 80’
1 mile: 7’40”
5000m: 8’45” pace
10000m: 10’ pace
Before today, whenever I measured one lap on the track, my best was 100’. I knew I wasn’t going totally all-out because it would usually be in the middle of a workout, but I really didn’t think I could better 95’ even if I did go all out.
But today, it was so sweet to see 1’20” on my watch. Just to make sure, I tried one more lap and clearly felt gassed out the second time, especially the last 100m, but still got 1’23”, so it wasn’t a fluke or measurement error.
Wade Van Niekerk, I’ve finally shattered your 400m WR of 43s (in my 2x world).
Rudisha and El Guerrouj, coming for your records next!
