I recently ran my first marathon. Around mile 23 my heart rate shot really high, I became exhausted, legs cramped up, and well just everything hurt. I was able to keep running, but had to slow way down. I can only assume that is the famous bonk, though if not for the heart rate I probably could have pushed it harder.
What should I focus on next time to avoid bonking? I’m not a big fan of watching people I’d been passing from miles 18-24 pass me back at the end.
As background, for the 5 weeks before the taper I maxed at around 40mpw. I used speed work every week (tempo intervals, etc) in my training and hit 20, 20, and 21 on my three longest long runs. My finish time was around 3:10.
I had pasta the night before. Honey and PB on white bread for breakfast. I had a gu 5 minutes before running and then one every 45 minutes. Drank a dixie cup or two at every water station, which was probably every couple of miles. I did not take any type of salt tablets since I hadn’t trained with them.
Any suggestions for my next marathon? The obvious answer is probably more mileage, but I’m not really sure my body is made for significantly more mileage, or that I have much more time for training.
Thanks.
