Ran a workout last week 12x400, 400 jog rec averaging 1:18, indicating 5:20 shape for the mile. Typed in 5:20 for the mile in the McMillan Running Calculator and it predicted a 3 mile time of 17:40 (5:53 per mile). I went out the first mile in 5:53 and then proceeded to die out, going 6:12 and then 6:28 for a final time of 18:33.
Anyone have issues with the McMillan Running Calculator? Or has it carried you to victory?
Should I up my mileage (currently sitting at about 40 mpw, league finals in 5-6 weeks)?
I've used the McMillan calculator and have found it to be pretty accurate for me, from 5K through half marathon. My marathon times have lagged about 5 minutes slower than predicted. I'm hoping to fix that this year by increasing my base mileage, but I sort of factor that 5 minutes in to my calculations, now. There are other calculators out there that claim to be more accurate, but none of them are 100%. Try some different ones and see if they better apply to you.
We're all different and rarely are we ever going to fall exactly in line with these predictions, across all distances. We all have distances we're more naturally suited for or better trained for. They're a guide, but not gospel.
