The times our men shoot for are considered beyond disastrous for African runners. We need to normalize better times instead of being satisfied eeking under 2:10.

That should be the solution for every runner, right? I'm currently in 18 minute 5K shape and I need to raise the bar, so my next race I will shoot for sub 13.

Except this isn't about individuals, but rather a culture.
It's difficult for an American to find a race to run the fast. Marathons like London and Berlin, have a front group, including pacers, that run crazy fast through halfway and beyond. It would be suicidal for an American to run with that group and they would end up running in no man's land instead.

"Culture" doesn't set goal race times, individuals do.

We don't know this for sure, because no Americans ever go to those races. Not even Rupp, our best-ever guy.
American marathoners have been the JV team for decades now. All our efforts are on qualifying slow-ass people for the trials through the half and full. It's a glorified fun run.

I believe them choosing not run in those races proves that I'm right.

Or maybe...
A "culture" of aiming for 5:00/mi = 2:10/2:11 marathons
A "culture" of aiming for 3:00/km = 2:06 marathons
Training paces and mental training would be slightly different.
In b4 some idiot suggests it’s because 5 minute miles instead of 3 minute kilometers, because they don’t understand how elites train and how they set race goals.
Nope, I was still too late. An idiot arrived.

Good point because the Japanese are also running closer to 2:06 then 2:10. Those darn British and their Imperial measuring system.

Nope, we just use common sense.

Lol, so close.

US needs to do what the E. Africans have been doing for years. Send the top talent to the marathon instead of having all the best young runners go to the track for years before moving to the roads. Ryan Hall won the 2005 NCAA 5k on the track, but immediately went to the roads after college. Et voila, AR in the half and one of the best marathoners in US history.
American runners are clean. Anyone running under 2:05 is dirty.
So easy
They should start by cutting the Olympic Trials qualifying time down to like 2:12 or 2:10. You got dozens of 2:19 guys who are "training for the Olympics". 😂😂😂
Silly comment. There are many fast marathons but Americans like the slow Boston/NYC double or the downhill CIM.
Plus, too many, if not all, have no ability or guts to go "balls to the wall". I actually have respect for Stinson - he may crash and burn but at least he goes for it, unlike Ward and the others that are content to run a controlled pace in the 2nd or 3rd group hoping to "pick off those runners that fell off". Then finish in 2:13. Big whoopie.
I'll take a Stinson DNF but went with the leaders that the whole cast of wannabees running 2:11 - 2:15.
