I’m slow and a relative beginner in my forties and my current rather modest goal is to be within 2x of WR times at distances up to 10K. The other day I measured my 100m sprint time for the first time in ages at the end of a good workout and got 14s flat, so I feel pretty sure I can do 13s with fresh legs. But I don’t think I’ve ever run 400m faster than 100s during my training runs, some of which I think were close to all out efforts. My 1 mile training PB is 7’45” but I’m pretty sure I can bring it down to 7’26” in a time trial. My 5K training PB is 27’ (less than 10% off 25’10”, twice the WR of 12’35”), but again, I wasn’t really trying to race, just doing an aggressive training run. But getting my 400m down to 86s (twice the 43” WR time) seems too far away, nearly 20% away.
Why am I extra bad at 400 (and probably 800 though I’ve not measured) compared to 100m and a mile or more? What type of training would help me achieve my rather modest goal?
