It's impossible for the GOAT of running to be a failure.
What would be success for this particular race is a better question. I would say a win regardless of time and/or sub 2:04.

I would think anything less than a WR would be a huge disappointment to LRC. I expect lots of “devestated” threads for anything other than 2:01. A win would be great regardless of time. I hope he does well and is satisfied with his race.
2nd fastest 5k,10k,26.2mi all at once.
(Still believe head to head Cheptegei would lose to him 10/10 times in their prime)
Like 9 track gold's
10 xc titles
Nothing he can do to not be the best of all time.
He's 39 so honestly. He has nothing to prove to me. Would be nice to see a win here and even a world record threat
he's already the GOAT to me. Whatever he does tonight would be a nice bonus.
2:05:59 or faster

Just noticed humidity 92% 😳😣
Its morning relative humidity is always like that. RH doesn't matter.. Thats why dew point is the only thing that counts. Dew point is 55f. Purrrrfect

Why would he be a failure?
He wouldn't. Isn't that the OP's point?
No its not his point.
His entire career is a flop if he does not win.
After all the big talk from his team he has to run a wr.
He could fail to crack 3 and still be the greatest ever.
Looks like aussiestatman wins the prize for first person to yank on Bekele 10 min before race is even over. So that was the benchmark.
Bekele didn't DNF, that should be a win! Also podium at bronze!

I don’t know how Americans can criticize a guy after he runs 2:06. He still took a shot at the world record despite too warm of conditions. Thats balls status. He put taking a chance at something great over just running for the win.
Why didn’t Kipchoge go out in 60 at the Olympics?

Sub 2:07
Someone not disappointed then.

Exactly. But this is letsrun were couch potatoes judge a sub 2:07 3rd place Major Marathon finisher at 39 years old as a failure.
He is NOT a failure, even if he DNF's. Tired of ALL the talk of this WR and that WR that can be broken. His manager should just shut up and let Kenenisa just run the damn race.
All these keyboard warriors, half of whom couldn't run 2:30 if their life depended on it, calling an all-time generational elite marathoner a failure because at age 39 he faded in a hot humid marathon and ran 2:06:47.

For the race. A failure for the race. I didn’t think I’d have to be that explicit. Sorry for the confusion.
You literally said "...for you to not think he's a failure." Not really a matter of interpretation. We're just responding to what you actually wrote.
Nobody sets world records in the marathon in 70 plus degrees and 39 year olds pretty much don't set world records period. 206 at 39 is awesome.
Exactly and to clarify that's most likely 2:30 for a half marathon, not a full!

He is still better than any of US marathoners. I am constantly amazed how he comes right back when it seems he was on his last leg.
