I'll bite since I don't make way more than that, and for a good while I was under that threshold.
The job is enjoyable, despite people saying college kids these days are impossible to work with, I find most are motivated and eager. There are a few you have to watch out for, but that is not a recent development.
The job is flexible and the hours are really not that bad. I run every day. No one makes me do anything nor forces me to maintain hours or to check in. If things get done, everyone is happy. I don't coach at the P5 level so maybe those guys see things differently, but I have had modest success and don't work extreme hours and I spend lots of time with my wife and kids. More and more meets are on Fridays, so in the fall I am home the entire weekend except for a few hours on Sunday morning for long run. I have virtually taken off December, half of June, and all of July the past few years.
The job is stimulating. There is not a lot of monotony, every year has new teams and challenges. I am outside a lot and spend less than three hours a day at a desk.
FWIW $40k is enough in most college towns. Even if you have a a family, it is comfortable if your spouse works par-time like mine. University benefits are usually very good and provide access to fitness centers and what not. I will never be wealthy by some standards (no expensive cars and only 1800sq ft house) but my house in nearly paid off, I have accumulated no other debt, I have a state backed retirement and substantial additional savings and investments to boot.
HE was asking about real NCAA coaches. The head coach at my college earns $200K, three assistants earn $100k, and two others earn $75k.
Hey, it is what it is... in 2011, I made $11k as a D1 GA, then $23,200 as a full-time Asst. Coach D1.. I then resigned, ran pro for a little, then worked a run shop for $30k then took a job with NIKE as a territory sales rep making $62k base for a few years and got into footwear product at a competitor for $124,080.. sometimes you start low to get high!
