Probably because family reunions were not being held due to COVID.
A reduction of inhabitants should not be considered a problem as the overpopulation of the world has created much turmoil and crisis. Throughout history, factors such as war, sub-par living conditions, and a lack of medical knowledge managed to keep world population growth under control. Today's advanced technology has allowed people to live longer and less difficult lives which in turn has brought about an atmosphere of outlandish affluence and greed.
China uses restrictions in an effort to limit population growth while the state of Alabama allowed a natural occurrence to manage its growth. We should be thankful for both approaches.

Bad and uninformed take. Overpopulation is a local problem in some places.
It most certainly is NOT a problem in the US and Alabama specifically. We could move every US citizen to Texas and Texas would have about the same population density as South Korea.
Also, you may not be (obv are not) aware that China has now flipped to being concerned about their population growth to the point of encouraging more kids. Try to keep up.

Wooo! Hey now!
Least surprising thing ever. They are generally last in everything along with other red states. Hey did you here Miss. and SC have poor health and poor education!
Over half the COVID deaths in Alabama were African-American though only about 25 percent of the population.
Everybody still cheering?
Germany also had more deaths than births. What's your point? Some states don't have many people moving to them, so the old people who lived there decades ago are dying, and there are fewer young people having babies.
In 2020, based on preliminary figures, there were 773,166 births and 985,620 deaths in Germany

I agree. Abortion should be outlawed.
"Total Abortions (2019): 6,009
The Alabama Center for Health Statistics reports that 6,009 abortions took place in Alabama during 2019. This number includes abortions performed on out-of-state residents but does not include abortions performed on Alabama residents in other states."

Wait, that doesn't fit the narrative.
I knew the demographics ... and new the numbers for AA deaths.
C'mon y'all keep cheering for the deaths of African-Americans.

Who's cheering?
This is a public health disaster and there's nothing here to cheer about - especially because it was completely preventable. So if you think 'the libs' are hailing this as a piece of 'told you so', that call is coming from inside the house.

Libs and lefties are cheering Alabama (southern) stats because they think that it is all the white Replublican Trump anti-vaxxers. You know that it is true. Read the comment section of articles on death rates / new case rates if you want to see ignorant leftist hate.

Deaths exceeded births in 25 states but NPR focuses on Alabama. Why is that?

So that smug liberals can cheer the numbers, assuming that it is redneck Republicans who are dying, while being ignorant of the actual facts.

Unvaccinated people are dying. Many of them are Trump voters who are vulnerable to disinformation campaigns the GOP has been running in red states. A lot of them are also people of color, who are skeptical of government-involved medicine for historical reasons. It is not good that either group of people is dying, but it is undeniably fueled in large part by GOP anti-vaccine, anti-science propaganda. Data on the delta variant has shown that folks living in very-Trump-leaning counties have died from COVID at up to 5x the rate of folks in very-not-Trump-leaning counties across the country in the latter half of the pandemic, with a strong correlation to disparities in vaccination rates
