Just a final thought - on the roads the 5k world record for 45 is 14:29. And 14:11 on the track. So a 13:30 would destroy the record.
I think the drop in performance coincides with responsibilities. Ive got 3 kids a stressful job etc. If i could just focus on training and recovery im pretty confident i could run 90sec faster. The vast majority of us masters are in the same boat i recon.

The records are weak. Real world class as a 45 year old = Bernard Lagat. If he wasn't marathon training at that age, he would still have been low 13. I think it's ok to talk coulda, woulda, shoulda when we talk about the very best athletes, but not ourselves.
Maybe you're right, the drop in performance is connected more to responsibilities than to decline in physical ability.
