That’s another thing running at night, especially on a weekend is a bad idea. That’s when teenagers are drunk and looking to hurt people.

Another thing is cell phones. Which may be why the last decade driving has gotten worse. I constantly see drivers swerve and its because they’re looking at their phones. I even saw a guy a red light watching a tv show on his phone. He had it attached above his steering wheel. The reality is you have to be an incredibly defensive driver to survive. And being a pedestrian walker, biker, runner is a death wish now.

Which brings up the question, have any of you had a similar close calls?
Yes. I was running on the left side of a dirt road with a dog on leash. An approaching big, lifted truck deliberately swerved towards me, and I had to jump off the road. There was no question it was deliberate. I called 911 right away, but didn't get the plate number.
I have a pretty good guess as to the driver - my GF's POS next door neighbor, a local with a lot of family in the town who moved back after being court martialed out of the Army. He has a record of road rage incidents, and also has tried to run my GF (driving) off the road by playing chicken in the wrong lane. Unfortunately, he is also buddies with the absolutely corrupt local (small town) cops (young dudes who were all friends in high school with the court martialed dude, we have a ton to back up my assertion on corruption). I reported it to the sheriff's instead, but didn't have a plate number to report. They hid the truck for over a year before my GF recently saw it again, so will look into pushing an investigation. My jump off the road shows up on my GPS track, which I've been keeping as evidence.
I agree with your advice. However, there have even been instances where people have been running on the left shoulder against traffic and STILL hit from behind. Recall the situation 6 years ago when top steepler Cameron Bean was killed in Chattanooga TN. He was running against traffic on a two lane road that runners use all the time, when distracted driver going the same direction as Cameron drifted all the way across the opposite lane and hit him from behind. Left him dying in the ditch and lied on the police report about sunlight glare (even though the sun couldn't have been in her face at the time) and thinking she had actually hit a deer (even though Cameron was thrown onto the hood of her car and into her windshield). Tragic regardless.

By the way, the situation in this town is exactly what "defund the police" is for. The bad cop literally goes to his court-martialed buddy's house during work hours to hang out and plot to make up sh!t about my GF and try to run her out of town, including providing supporting statements to false reports of barking dogs (when we weren't even home). All because my GF once reported the neighbor to the FD for an illegal fire, burning plastics in a burn barrel that was smoking out her house with acrid gases.
Last fall they came to the door and tried to nail me for a mysterious misdemeanor. I'm a law abiding dude, over 50, never committed a crime in my life. I studied up on things, and didn't open the door (made the wrong move of talking to police the year before, criticizing one of the officers, and they have been trying to nail me ever since). They literally came to the door every few weeks on average with another completely made up charge. The police chief has a million dollar suit pending against him for sexual harassment. The previous chief solicited women he pulled over for sex... it goes on and on. They really have their own fiefdom, and there is absolutely no oversight, and they know it. Have toyed with contacting the FBI or higher ups in the state, or bring a civil suit against the them, but it's difficult.
Assuming all the facts of this case are true, that's just a straight up sociopath. She needs to be killed or sterilized before some idiot simp knocks her up.

I haven't had the pleasure while running, but I have been buzzed while cycling too many times to count. Riding with traffic, I generally can't say whether each driver is malicious or distracted, but I suspect there are plenty of both types out there.

I’ll give her parents credit for doing the right thing and making their kid face the music for her horrible decisions.
You think this child began making poor decision's accidentally? The father should be arrested a long with the child, There should be a law that the parents of a child convicted of a crime should SHARE the sentence. Maybe that will force people to properly parent their kids.
This is the only way IMO.
When I was 15 I would never even think of something like this because my dad would've beat the shyte out of me for even getting in his car.
A few months ago a kid brought his father's gun to his middle school and fired several shots into the ceiling. Thank god no kid was hurt. The father should be doing hard fonking time or at the very least be fined $250k+ for allowing something like that to happen.
SMH.
I've thankfully never had a major incident with a car, but several with dogs...
This is a short distance from where I live. Absolutely horrifying. I have to say, that after 42 years of running, I drive at least 20 minutes each way to avoid running on any roads without a sidewalk and prefer trails that aren't accessible to cars. As many people on this thread have pointed out, there are too many distracted drivers out there, let alone amoral 15-year-olds. It's unfortunate the girl isn't 16. There would have been a much greater chance of being tried as an adult.

Gun control would have prevented this
I remember that accident. I also did a google street analysis of it at the time. You are correct in everything you said. It was even a low-traffic road, ending at the facility just a half-mile or so down the road. It was as "safe" a road route as you would find near Chattanooga.
Wanted to “bump” the man and “scare” him….while doing 50mph smh. Seems incredibly lucky for the girl she’s being charged as a juvenile and will be out of juvy when she turns 18.
Was he running on the wrong side of the road or did they cross over to the other lane just to “bump” him. Crazy story.
I have to laugh at how clueless the average poster is here. The murder's name is Sumata or some other make believe name. There are no "parents" or "parenting" involved. The murder's father is unknown or in jail and the murder is being raised by "the mother" or more likely the grandmother of some other relative . Wake up people! Reverse things and the FBI would be all over this "hate crime".
She’s not even being charged as an adult! Pathetic!
In just the last few years, three pedestrians in my mid-sized town were killed in separate accidents, two while walking inside a crosswalk, and one while walking to their parked car along side a road. Although the three pedestrians were obeying all traffic laws, police did not file charges against any of the three drivers. It's mind boggling that a driver can actually hit and kill a pedestrian who is legally walking in a crosswalk and not even be issued a ticket by the police. Why have crosswalks at all? Now, in response, what did our our town do? They painted the phrase "Look First!" at the entrance to every crosswalk in town. Is the phrase "Watch for Pedestrians" or "Stop Here" painted on the street to remind drivers approaching intersections or crosswalks to look for people crossing the street? Of course not, although I would find that message at least equally as important as "Look First" before stepping into the crosswalk. Basically, the policy seems to be "we're tired of policing bad drivers, cross the street at your own peril." In the past ten years or so, it seems the primary responsibility to avoid collisions has shifted away from drivers and to the pedestrian. Be careful out there.

Now do pedestrian traffic fatalities.
Things have gotten worse. They are now back to ~1980 levels of death as a fraction of total road deaths.
6200 last year vs the low of ~4300 in 2009
The killer is named Kasama Smith, per Fox.
