This kid was born and bred to be the greatest pole vaulter the world has ever seen, and even though he didn't grow up to be big, strong, or incredibly fast, like the other top pole vaulters, he is probably going to be the greatest ever. It's not as if it happens every day that a little kid gets to start working on pole vault in his yard. He owes everything to this country and considering that he had been smashing every age group record to that point, the odds were obviously overwhelmingly in his favor for making multiple U.S. teams easily. The ultimate pay-off would have been far greater had he done so. So, in my view, he took a shortcut that undercut loyalty and future fame and glory. But he is great, no doubt about that. By the way, notice that the "servant class" was wearing masks while the competitors were not at the Olympics.
