Regardless, he certainly uses the watch differently than the metrics slaves do. It's refreshingly nice to see guys like Jones and Troop guiding two of the most recently successful runners living in that area to key more on feel than pace or splits. It would work for a lot more people if they simply chose to free their minds and consider a different perspective. Can a pretty logbook or Strava feed with home run hero workouts result in great racing? Of course, but it doesn't always and it's certainly not necessary.
I just got a smartwatch this year and still alternate between that and my old Timex 1441 when I just want to run by feel or just check a split at the halfway point and store it in my head. The lap counter is even broken and acts weird. I will use the smartwatch for the marathon on Sunday but won't check every split either.
