Spoke to a couple of marketers/agents, saying $500k/year for Hocker.
He’s the number 1 US 1500m runner and could be the number 1 US 5000m runner this upcoming year. . Who was the last US distance runner that was signed by Nike at age 20 or younger? I hope he gets more than what Kessler is getting. Phil Knight literally said his favorite athletes on the track were Hocker and Teare on the Citius Mag podcast so I’m guessing Hocker got paid close to if not more than 500k.

You are speaking blatantly false information on Hunter. Hunter signed $400K annually for 10 years, along with his college paid for. You literally grabbed $100K from a random thread where someone talked out of their a$$. This was a well known fact a few years ago. Hunter would also not be shelling out cash for others' TME monthly expenses if he were only at $100K living in Boulder knowing this will end when he is 28.
If Hunter signed for anywhere near this amount, he freakin robbed the three stripes. He has won one national title and it was indoors. What else has he done as a senior ?
And just to confirm with everyone, Hunter got $600k/year. Not sure why people think this is still a mystery as it is public knowledge in the agent and athlete world. It's the reason he's able to purchase a $1M home in Boulder and manage other investments. This is adidas modus operandi.
$500,000 a year for ten years, plus college tuition anywhere he wanted to go. Plus bonus opportunities.
If hunter is getting that amount, hocker better be getting at least 800k

Sorry, doesn't always work that way.
When Adidas or Nike sign HSers they are buying in on prospective potential.
Potential often trumps actual performance in contract dollars.
Hocker has plenty of potential but is way more of a known entity, even at his young age.
Nike is buying in on a sure thing and Hocker sensed he needs to jump in now, while his Oly performance is still fresh enough to leverage $$$.
Kessler is full of potential, already faster than DH and was faster than Hocker before the Olys, plus his multi-sport ability puts him in a unique category.
Performance-wise, he may still go the way of DH or Alexa Efraimson but doubtful.
Kessler is way less developed or experienced than all these other phenoms were at 18.
Except for the "attention" tinman group generates, Adidas has pretty much pissed away their $$$ in regards to DH
Same with Nike and Efraimson but I don;t think they gave her nearly as much as DH got from Adidas.
I'm sure he's coming out just great, but I doubt Hocker gets anywhere near the ridiculous $$$ Adidas shelled out for DH.

This confirms for me. Drew Hunter is the most over payed track athlete ever. At least Webb set an american record in the mile and won the trials. Hunter has never made a national team, good for him for getting the bucks, but he is not worth that at all.
This happens all the time in all professional sports. Drew Hunter, Candace Hill, Jarrion Lawson, Sammy Watson, Mary Cain... there are many we never discuss full potential, big contract fails-

Why would Nike pay Hocker 500k? Am I missing something?

Not much, lets be real. But good on him for signing sooner rather than later. Good on his team for realizing that his market value is never gonna be higher and he should absolutely not waste his time in college bc his stock is gonna fall significantly if he does.
Ya probably not much. I had a teammate who signed with Nike after being NCAA runner-up, he ended up making a few world teams but had a bad race on the olympic year and didn't make olympics. His starting was around $20k, never even got close to $100k when he was making it through rounds at worlds. The NCAA champ his senior year was rumored to have signed for $70k at the time. So people saying several hundred thousand is laughable. I think it's realistic he signed for around $100k-$200k per year for a few years, and others have said, some big bonuses in there if he does big things like American records, or global medals. I still say no way Drew Hunter signed for hundreds of thousands per year for a decade. If that's true it's such a waste of money. The dude hasn't even raced in over a year. Why would someone like that get paid that much when my old roommate wasn't even making $100k and he made multiple world teams.
This is a slightly different topic but why doesn't the powers that be; agents, shoe companies or whomever do a better job of making track contracts public? I honestly think it would help the sport so much. So many kids (and adults for that matter) can't even make the connection that you can be professional in T&F.
Back in the day Ajee Wilson ran in our youth league in Philly, for example. A lot of the parents thought that she was running at Temple and we had to explain repeatedly that she's only taking classes there but is now a pro. It blew their minds. And it's like, "yeah remember English Gardner, Nia Ali and some of those other stars that came through this league? They became pros as well." Now Athing is the next legend from our league.
My point is, I understand that Kessler's contract numbers wouldn't rival those of a rookie Ja Morant but it would still get the idea out there that T&F is a professional sport just like the MLS, WNBA, etc. And perhaps that would help slightly drive up it's popularity.
I have no idea how much he got but hopefully he will continue with his education and get an employable degree. The money could easily be cutoff at any time and even top notch runners don't make serious coin.
If he could buy a house that would be great too. Beats paying rent.
