Agree but didn't Chicago 2019 and NYC 2019 (which was indeed fast) runners who qualified likely already burn their spot for the 2021 Boston marathon? I.e. they can't use their 2019 chicago marathon time twice...
You can use your time twice if your time is within both windows. The 2022 window goes back to September 1, 2019. So the fast fall marathons got people in for 2021 & now they can use that time again or their Boston time this year or another race they ran for 2022.
The 2023 window is open & so far the fall races haven't been super fast. Will need to see when the window closes. Traditionally it has been September, which would mean people have this winter/spring/summer to chase but not next fall. So people who are close should be reasonably happy that Boston/Chicago/Berlin/London weren't super quick. Will be interesting to see how the fall racing schedule impacts places like CIM & Houston.
I'm more/less under the impression that the marathon is just getting faster. So even if some races are slow, there are more people & more fast people running marathons who will find somewhere to go well under their time. I'm guessing that the standards will be lowered at some point instead of what's happening now. Although, it's probably worth it to BAA to have more qualifiers so they buy merch & maybe a virtual entry. Idk.
