No way is he going run track 10ks or World XC. 3k/5k is one thing, but he won’t seriously go beyond that (he doesn’t have world class long distance aptitude).
As for the general crux of this thread, I figure he could still run 3:32.0/7:33/12:59 in the right race, on the right day. If I were an American who could run 3:32.0/7:33/12:59, I would be/remain a professional runner, simple as that.
he would train for 10k XC as a way for prepping himself for track 5ks
He could do it and I suspect he WILL
No. Matt C. has a 1:44.xx 800 P.B. He is not going to train like a 1:50.xx or 1:51.xx 800m guy who races road 10K races, 1/2 Marathons & Marathons. Matt C. would want to be able to race occasional one mile races even though he may or may not switch to 5000m at Olympics & W.C. For a 1:44.xx 800m guy, racing 10000m is beneath him. I am not trying to be mean. That's the truth.
