With 90 minutes to go, he is on pace to run 310,5 km (193 miles). Let that sink in. 193 MILES IN 1 DAY. He is still running sub 8 min mile pace 23 hours in the race.
192 miles would be an even 8mph, or 7:30/mile. For 24 straight hours 🤯

To give you some perspective, no one in history has ever run more than 286 km (178 miles) but Kouros, who has 10 (!!!) results above that line, including the world record of 303,5 km (188,6 miles).
2nd place tonight is looking at like 295 K (281 K with 78 minutes to go), so #3 performer all time.
Sorokin becomes the second human ever to break the 300 km in 24 hours... WITH 51 MINUTES TO GO!!!
Pretty amazing.
Finally he is slowing down 10-15 seconds per lap.
He will be in new territory after this lap.
After 24 years, there is finally a new world record. Sorokin broke the old best result (303,5 km) with a 303,7 km in 23:26 hours and has 34 minutes to finish his masterpiece - the ultra-performance of the year (decade?? , century??).
Wow!
Karsten Warholm should move up to the 24 Hr. and smash this. Would feel like a jog for him.
Give this man the black page! Wow.
2nd and 3rd place ran great efforts as well.
Did not expect to see that record smashed like that. Wow. Respect.

This was the last full lap but he might get over 310k.

You gotta be kidding. Who cares about a 24-hour race? Kipchoge would break 200 miles if he cared about it at all.
Can't believe this record got broken. After reading the LR article a few months ago, (and a failed record attempt) I thought it would be years till it got broken. Congrats to Sorokin for this performace!
It's safe to say you are not alone. UTMB was yesterday, the premier ultra event with Francois and Courtney winning it in a dominant fashion, yet the whole ultra community is talking about Sorokin today. Up until now, this was THE record to beat and neither trail runners like Scot Jurek, Kilian Jornet, nor the likes of Hara, Ishikawa, and the other road greats have been remotely close.

Insane! I hate to be that guy, but could the shoes be the equivalent of about the 5 km between this and the old record? I'd say it's fully possible.
This is a cool record. At least the time period is defined by a meaningful natural event.
But wait...he ran around a track for a whole day?! I thought only I was sufficiently insane to do that kind of stuff😂

I hate to get into the shoe discussion right after a monumental achievement like this, but I see your point. It is entirely possible that the shoes are worth 1, 5 or 10 km, but we really don't know. Similarly, even tho we don't know much yet about those types of 1-day efforts, we still have a ton of data compared to when Kouros basically went out there and ran himself out. So just like other records in sports, the newer generations are getting more benefits than the greats before them.
In no way, shape or form is this diminishing what we saw today tho. There is a reason why people thought this will not happen in our lifetime, even with modern technology, pacing, shoes, calories in different forms and so many more things that are a benefit.
Shoes! He is wearing laceless Ultraboost. 330g. No significant running economy benefit there
No, he was wearing Alphaflys.

The new shoes are a little part of it, but not too much. Kouros was for over 2 decades unbeatable and only 2 runners ran further than 280k in 2006 and 2014. Kouros ran 12 times over 280k.
So nobody was even coming close ever. Aleksander Sorokin ran the second fastest non Kouros time at the Spartathlon in 2017. That was maybe the first indication that he could have a chance.
